2009-01-03 - Preston North End vs Liverpool
A Sports Betting Pick by Cruiser
Preston will prepare for one of its biggest matches in their season when they welcome Premiership leaders Liverpool for this Lancashire derby. As it stands now Preston are enjoying a good season and are well placed for a place for promotion. They come into this match having won six of their last ten games and have also won in each of their last five matches on home ground.
Last season Preston managed to disposed of top flight sides such as Derby but were beaten by eventual winners Preston in the next round. However this will be their toughest match in the competition as they have yet to play against a top flight side thus far.
Liverpool comes into this match as the current Premier League leaders and are unbeaten in their last ten games which included a 5-2 demolition of Newcastle in their last game.
However, it must be noted here that Liverpool have been knocked out by lower league oppositions in two of the last four seasons. Back in 2005 they were beaten by Burnley and last season they were beaten by Barnsley at Anfield.
With regards to the team news, Preston has been boosted by the availability of Ross Wallace ahead of this clash. Wallace, who is on loan from Sunderland, plays on the wing and has scored three goals since joining Preston. Eddie Kevin Nolan will also feature after his loan move from Blackburn was made permanent.
In attack former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor is competing with the likes of Jon Parkin, Chris Brown and Stephen Elliott for a place upfront.
However, the likes of Goalkeeper Wayne Henderson, defenders Liam Chilvers and Neal Trotman will not feature as they are recovering from injury and will not therefore be considered.
As for Liverpool, striker Fernando Torres will start this match as he needs match practice after having been out with injury since November. Club captain Steven Gerrard is also due to start despite being in the news for an assault charge.
Younsters such as Damien Plessis and David Ngog are pushing for a starting role but defensive duo Philipp Degen (foot) and Alvaro Arbeloa (hamstring) remain out of the side.
