I think we were quite unlucky on the weekend, as Manchester United managed a clean sheet against Wigan, who up until then had been finding the net with more ease than we expected. I'm going to keep faith with that very bet here, as I don't rate the United defence.
This is an easy group for United, who start against Galatasaray at home before facing matches against CFR Cluj and Braga. That should see them fare better than they did last year, when they surprised everyone and crashed out in the group stages. United bizarrely won only 1 of their 3 home games in the group last year, crashed out and then lost the 2 home games they played in the Europa League, edging Ajax but falling to Bilbao. A European season to forget.
This year they lack Rooney but have Van Persie and Kagawa, not to mention Scholes, who can still influence the game at his age. Of course, United are the likely winners, but the odds are too short and not worth bothering with unless you're looking for an accumulator selection.
Galatasaray are doing well domestically, having started the Turkish season with 3 wins and a draw from their 4 games, with Umut Bulut scoring 5 goals already. The Turks have waited 5 years to return to the competition and they do so at arguably the most prestigious of venues England have to offer, against the 2 time champs. They will have been waiting for this one for a while, and make no mistake, they will give it their all.
I know the bulk of the money will be on United, but I think the Turks could have a say in this and ruin a few slips. On the AH, I really think Galatasaray are worth a punt, as they could score a goal and make things difficult. Of course, with Persie in the game, you never know what could happen, so maybe not a good idea to bet against United's offence.
BETTING VERDICT
I see some pretty generous prices available if you want to trust the Galatasaray offence. Let's go with both teams to score in a game I think has an outside possibility of ending in a score draw.
