Coming into this match both sides managed to get 2-1 win in their domestic matches. With both sides resting players, Real Madrid still beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 and Dortmund beating Fortuna Dusseldorf with the same 2-1 margin.

Real Madrid has to win this match and get the goals if they are to do what Barcelona did over AC Milan in the previous round and qualify. Real Madrid has to keep a clean sheet and at the same time needs to score three goals to proceed to the final.
