While most of the World Cup qualifiers have shut down for the season, the CONCACAF section will conclude their final games until September with a couple of games on Tuesday. The United States will be looking to use this as a chance to really pull away as one of the top three teams and they can give themselves a real platform to start booking a place in Brazil next summer with a win in this one.
The United States will face Honduras, who are fourth in this six team section, and can open up a 6 point lead over them with 4 qualifiers to play with a win in Utah.
Over the last two weeks, the USA have won back to back qualifiers at Jamaica and at home against Panama to move to the top of this section and back in the driving seat for one of the three places in Brazil. The win over Panama means the United States have won both home games in the qualifiers and it is the home form that will see nations get through in the CONCACAF final round.
Honduras surprised the United States with a 2-1 home win over them to open this final round, but then failed to win any of three games, losing back to back away games at Panama and Costa Rica. However, they at least got their qualifying campaign back on track with a 2-0 home win over Jamaica last week.
However, it is a big ask for Honduras to travel to Utah and win this game considering they have failed to score in 4 of their 5 away qualifiers since the third stage. Three of their remaining five qualifying games are to be played away from home so it looks a big ask for Honduras to earn one of the top three automatic qualifying places, although this is a tight section with home form being key.
Prediction
The United States have got their qualifying campaign back on track and can put themselves in a strong position with a win in this one. They have been playing better and Honduras have struggled to score, let alone pick up points, away from home.
Honduras have failed to score in 4 of their last 5 away qualifiers and they have also lost both away games in this final round so backing the USA to win this one to nil looks the call.
