FA Cup : Portsmouth v Cardiff City - early prices

Cardiff reached the final by beating Barnsley 1-0 at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

Joe Ledley's ninth-minute thunderbolt for Cardiff halted the Tykes' giantkilling run and secured Cardiff their first FA Cup final appearance since 1927 and they'll now meet Portsmouth.

Barnsley, who conquered both Liverpool and Chelsea in previous rounds, created several chances of their own and ran themselves into the ground in front of a record attendance FA Cup semi-final attendance of 82,752, with Kayode Odejayi missing the best chance in the second half.

Pompey have been installed as hot favourites at a top-priced 1.40 (2/5) at Eurobet while Cardiff are 3.65 to win the FA Cup with Centrebet.

Why no FA Cup betting previews?

Actually - I didn't get many emails this weekend compared to previous rounds ( See earlier post ) and perhaps that was because one of the writers stepped up and had a shot.

But I think that this weekend proved the case as to why betting on FA Cup matches is not really a profitable venture. Of course the underdogs road their luck, but the somewhat haphazard team selection process certainly helped their chances too.

There seems to be a lot of excitement about the FA Cup now, with many people saying that this is the best FA Cup ever - but despite that I will NOT be having a financial interst in ANY of the remaining games.

So good luck to Portsmouth, Barnsley, West Brom and Cardiff City and I'm sure that their fans will be eagerly awaiting the semi-final draw.

ManYoo Still FA Cup Favourites

Manchester United are the 11/8 (2.38) favourites for the FA Cup even after being drawn against Portsmouth at Old Trafford in the only all-Premier League last eight tie.

Chelsea are at 2.75 to win the Cup after Avram Grant's men were paired with Liverpool's conquerors Barnsley in the quarter-finals.

Portsmouth were general 6/1 third favourites before the numbers came out but after being drawn away to one of the two big guns they've been pushed out to a general 14/1. (15.00) along with Middlesbrough as the biggest threats to Chelsea and Manchester United.

Boro have home tie against Cardiff. However, they'll still need to beat Sheffield United in a replay at the Riverside before they can pencil in a quarter-final with the Bluebirds.

West Brom were also cut after being drawn away to Bristol Rovers - the only League One side left in the tournament. The Baggies are as short as 12/1 with Sky Bet although Boylesports have them at 20s.

Cardiff are 51.00 with BetFred, while Canbet offer 151.00 on Barnsley, and Centrebet are 151.00 for Bristol Rovers.

Paddy Power are offering 3/1 (4.00) for any club except Manchester United and Chelsea lifting the trophy and 7/4 (2.75) for a non-Premier League team to reach the final.

Top Odds :
Manchester United @ 2.38 at Bet365
Chelsea @ 2.75 at Centrebet
Middlesbrough @ 15.00 at Centrebet
Portsmouth @ 15.00 at Betfred

FA Cup : Arsenal 3-0 Newcastle

As I said last weekend against Fulham- there's nothing like a 3-0 win for Arsenal to make the world feel a better place.

The game went pretty much as predicted with Newcastle far more adventurous under Kevin Keegan than the departed Sam Allardyce but showing too many gaps at the back.

It took 60 minutes for Arsenal to make the breakthrough but a pair of goals from Emmanuel Adebayor helped The Gunners to see off Newcastle. The final shot tally was something like 17-4 - showing the general flow of the game.

The FA Cup picks on Saturday went 4-1 with only the woeful Derby preventing a clean set - while the spreadsheet also produced two likely winners in Serie A.

All-in-all a very satisfactory day at the office, and a profitable one too.
Enjoy the beers.

FA Cup Fourth Round.

It's another FA cup weekend as the fourth round is played - decimating the Premir league fixture list to just one match.

And as I can't really find a good betting angle in the Aston Villa v Blackburn league match I'll have to take a quick look at the cup program here.

Arsenal v Newcastle
Take Arsenal. Obviously I like the chances of Arsenal here - and at 1.40 the price is worth including in an accumulator.

Coventry v Millwall
Take Coventry. Coventry beat Blackburn at Ewood Park in the last round, and also knocked an understrength Manchester United out of the Carling Cup - and so I like the look of the 1.75 price on Coventry beating Millwall who are struggling in League One.

Derby County v Preston North End
Yes - I'll be on Derby. I know that they're rock bottom of the Premier League - but that should actually help our bet here as County are surely doomed to relegation in the league and they may as well make their cup run a season highlight.

Preston are struggling two leagues down in League One - so the 1.91 on offer for the Rams winning at home seems a pretty good price to me.

Liverpool V Havant and Waterlooville
Obviously Liverpool should win comfortable but the price is useless. Perhaps you can play the -2.75 asian handicap at 1.60 or so?

Portsmouth v Plymouth
Take Portsmouth. Fratton Park isn't easy for Premier League sides to visit and Pompey should havew too much pace and class for Plymouth. Best price is 1.44.

----

So there we have it. Five sides that look likely to win on Saturday - at prices that seem ok too.

STAKING PLAN
As far as a staking plan goes - well you could put them into a five-team accumulator - but that never really appeals to me as I like getting a payout each and every weekend rather than once a month.

So I recommend taking these five options along to your favourite online bookies and working out which site are offering the best prices. Then see if you can split the bets into two bets of a double and a treble to give you insurance against ONE upset.

That way if we get four out of five then we should be sitting on a nice little profit on Saturday evening. Good luck.

FA Cup : Liverpool to face Havant at Anfield

Blue Square Conference South club Havant and Waterlooville beat Swansea 4-2 to make sure of a dream trip to Anfield on January 26 in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Richard Paquette, Jamie Collins and Rocky Baptiste gave the Hampshire side a three-goal lead, before Guillem Bauza pulled a goal back for the League One leaders in the 39th minute.

Jason Scotland made it 3-2 - but Tom Jordan's 65th-minute goal made sure of victory for Havant and Waterlooville.

---

New Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan watched the Magpies beat Stoke 4-1 at St James' Park to set up a fourth-round trip to Arsenal.

Michael Owen and Claudio Cacapa gave the hosts a two-goal lead, with James Milner and Damien Duff finishing off the Coca-Cola Championship side in the second half.

However, former Sunderland striker Liam Lawrence had the last word, denying Shay Given a clean sheet with a goal a minute from time.

---

Manchester City will travel to Sheffield United in the fourth round after beating West Ham with a 73rd-minute goal from Brazilian midfielder Elano.

---

And Hereford set up a fourth-round tie at home to Cardiff with a 1-0 victory over Tranmere at Edgar Street, with Simon Johnson scoring in the 72nd minute.

FA Cup 3rd Round : Favourites fail to win - almost everywhere!

You'd have been better off picking teams at random !It was a tough weekend for favourites backers in the FA Cup this weekend with a mix of upset wins and draws meaning that only 7 of 22 teams that started as odds-on favourites actually managed to win.

You'd have been better off picking cup winners at random over the weekend!

Although there were no total shocks in the FA Cup on Sunday we still saw Liverpool, Newcastle, Derby and Fulham were all held by lower league opposition.

Liverpool are now 7.00 (6/1) (BetFred) for the trophy, while Newcastle are 29.00 (28/1) with Bet365 for Wembley glory.

At least my team Arsenal obliged with a good result as they beat Burnley 2-0 and covered the asian handicap bet too. The Gooners are now a 5.00 (4/1) chance at Ladbrokes to lift the cup.

On Saturday Manchester United beat Aston Villa 2-0 to book their place in the last 32. They are now 4.33 (10/3) favourites at BoyleSports to win the FA Cup.

Chelsea were also among the winners - they beat QPR 1-0 - and Avram Grant's side are now joint-second favourites to lift the trophy in May, as they are 4/1 with BoyleSports.

Why no FA Cup previews Gooner ?

Why no English FA Cup previews Gooner ? - that was the question that I received nearly a hundred times this weekend when I didn't offer any personal cup picks on the main site.

I think that you've now seen the answer as a barrage of "upset" results hit most tipsters picks during the 3rd round.

In Europe, the domestic Cup is treated quite lightly, offering no more than a midweek diversion from the serious bread n butter of league football.

In England, it IS a little bit different, due to the age and history of the FA Cup competition as modern football's longest surviving trophy dating all the way back to 1872.

But the allure of the cup has definately changed in the last twenty years, with prize money, congested fixture lists, and a surfeit of football on TV all playing their part in lessening the status of the FA Cup.

TV EXPOSURE :
Back when I was a lad, the FA Cup was likely to be the ONLY live game that you would see on TV during the season. So reaching the final and worldwide exposure was a big thing.

Now there are literally 20-30 games on the box each week - all the rounds are covered - and frankly the FA Cup final is just one more telvised game and certainly not the major aim for the biggest clubs.

So in the fans eyes - the Cup is no longer the be-all and end-all and this is shown in the dwindling attendances in cup games right around the country.

PRIZE MONEY
Whether it's prize money or just TV appearance money for playing in the English Premier League and/or Champions League - there is little doubt that the FA Cup is a distant 3rd priority for teams with European commitments.

Arsenal's football budget is based around the TV money payments from the Premier League and Champions League, and the couple of million quid on offer for the FA Cup probably is now less than the gate receipts from a single league game at the Emirates Stadium with 60,000 attending.

Winning the silverware is nice - but it's only a consolation prize - "at least we won the cup".

The Cup Final is probably not even the most valuable domestic match either - as I've heard it said that the playoff match for the teams that finished 3rd - 6th in the lower English Championship is considered to be worth GBP 30m (in Premier League TV money).

IF the Football Association REALLY want the FA Cup to regain it's allure - then there are a lot of POUNDS, EUROS or DOLLARS to be found in order to make the Cup a major target.

Club motivation has to be examined when making a punt - and typically the only clubs that are fully motivated are those that are not challenging for a league title AND are not likely to be troubled by relegation either.

FIXTURE LISTS :
OK - I'm less sure about this arguement - because I remember teasm in the 1980's playing 70+ games in a season with a squad of just 14 or 15 players.

However, the game has changed, and perhaps because its faster, or perhaps because players are more pampered, it seems that squad rotation and fielding weaker sides in the cup is de-rigeur.

This makes picking results much harder as you have to guess at the mangers selection policy, especially amoung the big clubs who may be playing every four days at various stages of the cup.

You also have to factor in that teams will often settle for a replay with a few minutes left - instead of pressing on for the winner - meaning that the number of draws does tend to go up - and few people like to bet on the draws.

----

So Why no English FA Cup previews Gooner ? simply because there are too many moderating influences and artificial events going on to make picking two line-ups easy - let alone forecasting a result.

So this wekeend I left it to guys who were pretty close to the action of several clubs - and even then they had plenty of problems in foreseeing what eventually happened.

We will see how the fourth round draw pans out - as their may be a tie or two worth a punt.

FA Cup 3rd Round : Upsets galore

Scottish midfielder Gary McDonald's first-half strike gave League One Oldham a famous 1-0 FA Cup third-round triumph against mighty Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The League One side, over 50 places below the Merseysiders, fully deserved their victory after a battling performance.

Everton fielded a much-changed side, and McDonald's 25-yard cracker on the stroke of half-time was enough to beat them.

---

Michael Mifsud scored twice as Coca-Cola Championship club Coventry booked their place in the fourth round with a memorable 4-1 win over Blackburn at Ewood Park.

The Sky Blues, who dumped Manchester United out of the Carling Cup earlier this season with a 2-0 win at Old Trafford, were in good form against Premier League opposition and never looked in danger of losing the lead given to them through Mifsud's crisp volley after 34 minutes.

They doubled their advantage after 64 minutes when Zurab Khizanishvili was adjudged to have fouled Leon Best in the penalty area and defender Elliott Ward coolly stepped up to fire past Brad Friedel.

Dele Adebola added a third from 18 yards before David Bentley scored a consolation five minutes from time for Mark Hughes' beleaguered side.

Mifsud added a fourth in the dying stages as Iain Dowie's side celebrated a memorable day.

---

Chris Brandon scored nine minutes from time to secure another cup shock as League One Huddersfield beat Premier League Birmingham 2-1.

Luke Beckett handed the Terriers a dream start as he poked home from close range after just four minutes but Garry O'Connor levelled for Blues 15 minutes later.

Huddersfield never looked out of place against their more illustrious opponents and Brandon slotted home from close range late on to book their place in the next round.

---

Holders Chelsea were made to work hard for their 1-0 victory over neighbours QPR at Stamford Bridge.

They scored the only goal of the game after 39 minutes in fortuitous circumstances as Claudio Pizarro's shot cannoned off the post before rebounding into the net off the back of Rangers goalkeeper Lee Camp.

--

In other games :

Manchester United progressed as goals in the last 10 minutes from Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney saw off Aston Villa 2-0 in the evening kick-off.

Bolton left out a string of first-team players, including Chelsea target Nicolas Anelka, and were made to pay as David Carney's solitary strike put Sheffield United through.

Dave Nugent's third goal for Portsmouth secured a 1-0 win over Ipswich, who had Liam Trotter dismissed in the first half.

Paul Scharner's first-half header, Paul McShane's own goal and a neat strike from David Cotterill helped Wigan cruise past Sunderland 3-0 at the Stadium of Light.

David Wheater's second-half goal ensured there was no upset at Ashton Gate as Middlesbrough came from behind to see off Bristol City 2-1.

Two replays required :

Stephen Hunt matched Dimitar Berbatov's brace as Reading secured a 2-2 draw with Tottenham, who had Tom Huddlestone dismissed for violent conduct.

Manchester City and West Ham will meet again after a dour goalless draw at Upton Park.

Manchester United favourites to win the FA Cup.

MANCHESTER UTD ODDS-ON FOR FA CUP

Manchester United are odds-on for the FA Cup following their 4-1 demolition of Watford.

A Wayne Rooney brace and a goal each for Cristiano Ronaldo and Kieran Richardson ensured a smooth passage to Wembley for United, who were far too strong for Watford and are now odds-on across the board for an FA Cup triumph.

Sporting Odds are a best-priced 10/11 about United, with Chelsea available at 6/4 and Blackburn 14/1 (at BetFred) .

Chelsea face Blackburn on Sunday at Old Trafford in the second semi-final.

English FA Cup Quarter-Final Review

So there we have it - four quarter-finals played and a fair share of drama involved and neither of the two heavily favoured sides were able to make it through at the first time of asking.

But were any of the results a REAL surprise ?

Certainly three of the games went the way I expected, with Blackburn (beating Man City) and Watford (over Plymouth) always the most likely winners, although Rovers had to battle hard when reduced to 10 men.

I also picked Manchester United to struggle to subdue Middlesbro - and I had that game marked down as a 1-1 draw on my card - but I'll take final 2-2 scoreline as a successful prediction.

So that's three results that were porbably on most people's cards.

In the final game I expected Spurs to try hard - but tire after a tough game on Thursday night - and be swept aside by Chelsea's second half effort.

However, I was extremely surprised at the fight that Spurs put up at Stamford Bridge as I did not expect them to keep their recent goal scoring streak alive with three first half goals. When was the last time Chelsea conceded three goals at home?

Chelsea's defending did look woeful in the first half - and the absence of John Terry was obvious - it's certainly interesting to hear that his contract negotiations with Chelsea have suddenly stalled too.

In the second half I thought that the game did go as expected - with Spurs tiring noticaeably late on - and you did always get that feeling that the equaliser was coming didn't you?

Mind you Jermanie Defoe rattled the Chelsea crossbar with only a couple of minutes left when he had the winning of the game in his hands - and you just wonder if that crucial miss may come back to haunt Spurs as they had to settle for a 3-3 draw.

Certainly Tottenham should not be frightened in the replay at The Lane - but Chelsea are now well warned - and it'll be a huge clash.

Looking forward to it already.

Rovers in to 6/1 to win FA Cup after beating Arsenal

Blackburn have been made 3rd favourites and are into as short as 6/1 for FA Cup glory after they knocked out Arsenal in their fifth-round replay on Wednesday night.

Chelsea (13/8 with Ladbrokes) and Manchester United (7/4 at PaddyPower) have both been shortened following the Gunners' demise.

IF you want to bet against recent history and still think that an outsider can win then you can get some very tasty prices :
- Spurs can be backed at 12/1 at BetFred and Ladbrokes
- Manchester City are 16s at SportingOdds
- Middlesbrough on 20/1 at SportingOdds,
- Watford on 33/1 over at Victor Chandler
- and biggest of all is Plymouth at 66s at SportingOdds

FA Cup Review : Bolton 1-3 Arsenal

Arsenal travelled to Bolton without their central spine as Henry, Cesc and Lehmann were all rested but the players that went North did a great job and secured passage into the weekend's 5th round.

Emmanuel Adebayor's deflected shot had put Arsenal ahead in the 13th minute and, right until the final seconds of normal time, the visitors looked like they were going through.

ARSENAL 1-0 : Adebayor

However in the dying seconds Abdoulaye Meite scrambled the ball in from close range to send the tie into extra time. (don't expect me to post coverage).

The deciding goal was struck by Freddie Ljungberg 13 minutes from the end of extra time after Freddie raced clear after excellent work by Jeremie Aliadiere and steered a wonderful shot into the far corner of the net.

ARSENAL 2-1 : Ljundberg

Ljungberg's goal seemed to finally extinguish the life from Sam Allardyce's side. But much of the drama was still to come. In the dying minutes, Tal Ben Haim was sent off for his second booking and Julio Baptista managed to miss another spot kick and then Adebayor added a third goal.

ARSENAL 3-1 : Adebayor

The result sees Arsenal into the Fifth Round. They now play Blackburn on Saturday at Emirates Stadium.

(If you want to read an entertaining pro-Gooner view then checkout this match review post from ArseBlog which made me laugh out loud ..

Note - not recommended for Sam Allardyce's mother)

FA Cup replay : Young Guns on Show

It's all a bit quiet for Arsenal news today - as the team have a rare midweek off after dealing to Liverpool at Anfield in the 3rd Round.

(had to get that in - sorry Duncan)

But you could still be forgiven for asking the question as to whether Arsenal's young players might steal the headlines tonight ?

Full-back Kerrea Gilbert will return to north London with Cardiff to try and get the better of Tottenham in their FA Cup third round replay on Wednesday.

And Birmingham will include two of their three Arsenal loan players at Newcastle - Fabrice Muamba and Sebastian Larsson - with Nicklas Bendtner ruled out through injury.

The BBC does a good write up on all four players - and before anyone leaps off the deep end about bloody European youngsters - I will point out that two of them are actually English as well ... although it's hard to tell with names these days eh?

( you can see the full item at BBC Sport here )

If young Gilbert could do the business tonight for Cardiff against Spurs then I'm sure he'd be the toast of Gooners everywhere on Thursday morning.

As far as betting goes - both Newcastle and Tottenham look like getting wins in 90 minutes tonight - but the prices are poor so you might want to consider HT/FT double to get better prices - rather than the outright win.

(see Chris's previews on the main site for details)

Good luck with your punts.

Tuesday Night :
FA Cup 3rd Round Replay Night

Tuesday night is replay night - and there are eight games to choose from around England.

We've had interent tipster Chris from Tip-Ex stop in and give us three of his best choices - two likely winners and one outsider - and you can read his choices by following the links off of the English football page on the main site.

I generally agree with all three of his picks but again I have to point out that as will all cup games it's got to be a case of keeping the stakes small.

The Premier League clubs have to be favoured at home of course - but may try to be a little "cute" and field under-strength starting line-ups knowing that by having a strong bench they can still rescue the tie in extra time.

And remember, these replays are taking place because the first match ended all square - so no matter how sure you THINK that you are - don't go overboard ok ?!

FA Cup 3rd Round : Liverpool 1-3 Arsenal with Video

OK - so depsite my fears and my diatribe on the FA Cup - I tuned into this game ... and I must say that by halftime I was feeling a lot better about the competition.

Liverpool dominated the first 30 minutes or so in terms of possession but the Reds really do lack and out-n-out striker in the style of say Ian Rush, Michael Owen or even Robbie Fowler.

Instead they have Peter Crouch and Dirk Kuyt and it would be fair to say that they were pretty quiet during the whole period - seemingly not brought into play by that system that Rafa Benitez prefers.

Then Tomas Rosicky appeared on the scene and wham bam - thank you maam - Arsenal were into the HT break 2-0 up.

In the second half Liverpool huffed and puffed - and did grab a goal back with this effort from a corner ...

This wound Liverpool up but their tactics were one-dimensional (perhaps because they'd scored from a corner) and Liverpool spent 20 minutes bombing in cross after cross after cross ... without getting any reward

And with 7 minutes left Thierry Henry showed that the extended break has done him the world of good as we zoomed past a slow-motion Jamie Carragher and then wound threw the rest of the Liverpool defence to score and sew up the game.

Arsenal came - they saw - and they scored three goals which is as many as Liverpool had conceded in all 11 home games this season.

That was enough to knock the holders out of the Cup - and put Arsenal's name into the 4th round draw.

FA Cup - 3rd Round - Liverpool vs Arsenal

It's the 3rd round of the FA Cup tomorrow - and I wish that I could somehow recapture the excitment I had as a kid about it all.

But I can't.

I don't know whether it's because I'm a jaded Gooner, after all I've seen Arsenal win the FA Cup 4 times in the last decade, or whether it's the knowledge the the FA Cup is pretty much the consolation prize of English football these days.

But the "magic of the cup" doesn't work like it used to eh?

I've published my preview for the game on the main site and it's not looking too rosy for the Arse as they'll have to do without both Fabregas Cesc and Robin Van Persie who are both suspended for this game.

Adebayor is also out (he should be back for Blackburn in the league next week), while neither Theo Walcott nor William Gallas will make this trip - but they might go on Tuesday for the Carling Cup.

Liverpool look strong at Anfield this season (9-2-0 23:3 in the league) and I don't think that they've lost at home since Benfica beat them their 2-0 last season to knock Liverpool out of the Champions League.

Mind you we do have Thierry Henry back and Gilberto will hold the fort in midfield too - in fact when you look at the Arsenal side making the trip I suspect that 59 or 60 of the other 64 teams still in the competition would happily make a mass player exchange - so we've got a talented (if raw) side.
:-)

So - where there is Henry there is Hope - although I suspect that Gooners will be better off betting on Henry scoring ANYTIME rather than the Arse getting a result.

Hopefully I'm wrong and you can all post "told ya so" comments on Saturday night eh?

Good luck all.

FA Cup 3rd Round :: Outright Betting Options

Ah the FA Cup. The last bastion of the "true spirit" of the game - where romance abounds and giant killings can happen at any moment right?

BOLLOCKS !!!

Despite what you BBC commentator or Sky Sports hype merchant might tell you the winner of this season's FA Cup will almost surely come out of the short list of big 4 clubs - namely Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester Utd.

The "romance" of the cup is dead. The big clubs have the depth to win through nearly all the time now. Take a look at the results of the last 10 finals :

2005-06 Liverpool 3-3 West Ham Utd (Liverpool won 3:1 on pens)
2004-05 Arsenal 0-0 Manchester Utd (Arsenal won 5:4 on pens)
2003-04 Manchester Utd 3-0 Millwall
2002-03 Arsenal 1-0 Southampton
2001-02 Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea
2000-01 Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal
1999-00 Chelsea 1-0 Aston Villa
1998-99 Manchester Utd 2-0 Newcastle Utd
1997-98 Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle United
1996-97 Chelsea 2-0 Middlesbrough

So thats a full decade of dominance by the big four :
- Arsenal 4 times
- Liverpool 2 times
- Manchester Utd 2 times
- Chelsea 2 times

The rest of England has won the FA Cup exactly ZERO times in the last 10 years.

Furthermore, unlike the Carling Cup where the top sides often field "C" teams or "youth" sides - if you actually look at when the top teams get knocked out of the FA Cup then it's nearly always by other members of the big 4 club.

Best prices for these sides are :
- Chelsea 3.75 @ PremierBet
- Man United 6.00 @ BlueSquare
- Liverpool 9.00 @ Bet365
- Arsenal 10.00 @ Bet365

And so if you find yourself getting tempted by Bolton @ 35.00 at Gamebookers or Tottenham at 17.00 @ PremierBet or West Ham to go one better this year at 34.00 at BetFred then remember that at best all your are doing is placing a bet for trading purposes and hoping that they do not get drawn against any of the giants.

So while there may be an upset or two, it's likely that your underdog will go out when they meet one of the giants.

Punt with your head - not your heart - or any outdated romanic notions about "the romance of the cup".

Good luck.
