2007-12-22 - Nevada Wolfpack at New Mexico Lobos

New Mexico Bowl, 22nd December 2007
Venue: Albuquerque, New Mexico

New Mexico Lobos
The Lobos have an immediate advantage in this bowl game, they are at home, there will be no traveling involved and a partisan home crowd will be on hand.
On the field the Lobos have had a solid season, only one of their defeats has come at the hands of a worse team, that was on opening day at UTEP. Good wins include victories over Arizona, Wyoming and Air Force.
The key to the success has been the defense, it ranks 25th in Division 1A and is giving up a paltry 329 yards per game.
On the other hand the offence is unspectacular although it is efficiently led by second year QB Donovan Porterie, he is rarely intercepted and is backed up by a solid running game. The critical point will be if they can score enough points to outgun their opponents.
Nevada Wolfpack
Possibly the luckiest team to be in the postseason, they won their final game of the season to sneak in. If not for an early season victory over D1AA Nicholls State then they would not be eligible at all.
Nevada’s only hope for victory is to outgun their opponents, they have the 6th ranked offence, this needs to be tempered with the fact that they play in the pass happy WAC where teams pass on every down.
Conversely they have a miserable defense and have not stopped their opponents from scoring.
Both teams have faced UNLV and New Mexico State, both are 2-0 against these opponents but New Mexico have the slightly more comprehensive victories
Verdict:
It is he classic battle of attack against defense, on this occasion the defenders will prove to be more resolute.
