UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals
Stamford Bridge - London
Tuesday, 8th April 2008 - KO 20:45 (CET)
CHELSEA (England)
Chelsea go into the second leg trailing 2-1 after Fenerbahçe triumphed with two second half in Turkey last Wednesday - but Chelsea will have the confidence of an unbeaten home record in European competition dating back 26 months.
During that time Chelsea have played ten UEFA Champions League matches in London – winning seven and drawing three of them.
Chelsea's progress to the last eight has been smooth. After winning Group B with a record of three wins and three draws, they overcame Olympiacos in the last 16. Following a goalless first leg in Greece, they won 3-0 in the return.
This is the eleventh time Chelsea have gone into a second-leg tie in Europe trailing. In six of the ten previous instances, they fought back to win and qualify.
FENERBAHCE (Turkey)
The recent away record Fenerbahce in the competition does not inspire too much confidence given that they have lost five and drawn two of their last seven matches in the competition proper.
However, you will notice that Fenerbache did manage to win 2-0 in Brussels against Anderlecht earlier this season in the final round of qualification - so away success is not impossible.
Fenerbahce reached the quarter-finals by beating Sevilla 3-2 on penalties after a 5-5 aggregate draw in the first knockout round. They had previously advanced to the knockout stages for the first time – and at the fifth attempt – after finishing second in Group G with a record of W3 D2 L1.
THE VERDICT
I have Chelsea with a significant 1.5 goal ratings advantage for this match and it's an advantage that usually means a home win for The Blues in Europe.
The one exception was the 1-1 home draw with Rosenborg earlier in this season, a result that was instrumental in the departure of Jose Mourinho.
This situation seems tailor-made for a team like Chelsea with a very strong defence to be able to simply grab the goal (or two) that they need while dominating posession and not allowing too many scares at the back.
