They may have needed plenty of helping hand from Brighton, but Everton were able to get the new era at the Hill Dickinson Stadium off to a flying start with a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon. Over the course of the season, there are likely to be a number of 'firsts' at the new Stadium and one of those comes up on Wednesday when the first Cup tie is played here.

David Moyes will be pleased by some of the business that Everton have been able to do after Jack Grealish's eye-catching performance in the win over Brighton, but he wants further additions before the transfer window closes until January. The Premier League is the priority, but Moyes will also be tasked with helping Everton to Cup success and this is a club that has not been beaten in the Second Round of the League Cup since 2001.

Everton's win over Brighton means they have won 4 of their last 5 Premier league games with the exception being the late loss at Leeds United on the opening weekend. This is only the second competitive fixture at the new Stadium, although it should be noted that Everton have lost 1 of the last 8 games they have hosted in all competitions.

Expect to see some changes in the starting lineup to offer opportunities to those who have not had considerable minutes early in the season. Tyler Dibling has been signed, but may not be quite ready, while the likes of Nathan Patterson, Jarrad Branthwaite and Vitalii Mykolenko are not expected to be risked.

Mansfield Town

The pre-season expectations around Mansfield Town were not very positive after the team finished 17th in the League One table last season. They were comfortably clear of the bottom four places in the Division in terms of points and Mansfield Town retain the services of Nigel Clough as manager, but even the most optimistic of fans could not have expected the start to the campaign.

Nigel Clough may not have reached the heights of father Brian, but he has proved to be a solid lower League manager and one that can lead his teams to overachieve. The Stags are 9th in the League One table and they were away winners in the League Cup First Round when beating Chesterfield 0-2.

Mansfield Town had lost their opening 2 League fixtures, but they will make the journey to Liverpool with 4 straight wins behind them in all competitions. The side had failed to win any of 4 away games in all competitions, losing 3 of those matches, but Mansfield Town have since won at Chesterfield and Exeter City.

In the past, Nigel Clough has liked to keep the momentum behind his team in the Cup competitions and that has meant little rotation used.

Head to Head

This is the first competitive meeting between the clubs.

Prediction

The League Cup has a habit of throwing up plenty of early shocks and Nigel Clough has helped the likes of Sheffield United and Burton Albion enjoy strong Cup runs under his guidance.

Those were in charge of clubs that were not expected to have that kind of success and Nigel Clough deserves a lot of respect for that.

However, his Mansfield Town team have a significant gap to bridge against Premier League opposition and David Moyes will be urged to take the Cups seriously as Everton fans look to end a thirty year wait for silverware.

The new Stadium is one that Everton will be looking to make into a fortress and an early Cup exit may just slow any thoughts of that.

Everton will make some changes to the starting eleven, which is not a surprise in August, but they should still have enough to beat this opponent. Mansfield Town are in strong form, but this is a step up in level and the hosts can win by a couple of goals on the night.
