Aston Villa

There is some real momentum being built up by Aston Villa as the season draws into the festive period and the 2-1 win over Young Boys puts them firmly on track for the Last 16 in the Europa League. They came from behind to beat Leeds United by the same scoreline last Sunday and Unai Emery has to be very pleased with the way his whole squad have come together after a difficult start to the campaign.

The three points earned at Elland Road has pushed Aston Villa into 4th place in the Premier League table and returning to the Champions League is a big ambition for the club. They have a 4-1-1 record at Villa Park in the Premier League where Aston Villa have scored 10 goals and conceded 5.

Aston Villa have won 10 of the last 12 games in all competitions, including 4 in succession since losing at Anfield at the beginning of the month. Home form has been a huge part of the successes that have been produced under Unai Emery and The Villans have won 7 in a row here in all competitions.

Tyrone Mings is missing, but the squad are in a good place overall and it has allowed Emery to make changes to keep players fresh.

Wolves

Rob Edwards admitted he got into management so he could one day take charge of Wolves Football Club- he left a Middlesbrough team hoping to end this season with a return to the Premier League to take over at Molineux. The new manager has a big job on his hands to keep Wolves in the Premier League, but felt he could not say no to a job that may not come up again.

Last weekend would have served as a big notice to Rob Edwards as to the size of the task at hand when Wolves were beaten 0-2 by Crystal Palace to remain rooted to the bottom of the Division. That means Wolves are now 9 points from safety and they have scored just 7 goals all season, while they travel for this Midlands derby with a miserable 0-1-5 away record.

Wolves have now lost 6 in a row in all competitions and the real concern for all associated with the club is the ease in which a number of those defeats have been recorded. They are conceding far too many goals and Wolves have not scored in any of the last 3. The side conceded very late in a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur in September, but Wolves have lost 3 away Premier League games since then and conceded 8 goals without scoring at Sunderland, Fulham and Chelsea.

Matt Doherty has been ruled out, but there is a hope he can return for the midweek Premier League game.

Head to Head

Both Premier League games were won by the home team last season.

Aston Villa have won the last 2 at Villa Park against this Midlands rival.

Prediction

There are some teams and managers that are far more experienced at dealing with Thursday night European action and being able to follow up with solid Premier League results and Aston Villa and Unai Emery are certainly amongst the best.

It has been a key reason the team have been able to win 10 of the last 12 games in all competitions and Emery has been showing off some of the squad depth that has been put together at Villa Park.

Aston Villa have played in the Premier League 4 times after playing in the Europa League this season and they have won all of those. It helps that all of the Premier League games have been at Villa Park, but that is the case again this Sunday and makes it very difficult to see how Wolves can earn a positive result.

Not only have they lost on each of the last 2 visits to Villa Park, but Wolves have looked by far the worst team in the top flight this season. The 2 points secured from 12 League games backs that up and this is a team that have been conceding goals for fun, while failing to make up for the departed Matheus Cunha in the final third.

This is a 'boring' pick, but it is hard to see anything other than a home win and one in which Aston Villa score at least twice.

During the 7 game winning run at Villa Park, the home team have scored at least twice in 5 of those, while they have managed to do the same in 3 of the 4 Premier League games after playing in the Europa League. The exception is the 1-0 win over Manchester City, but Fulham (3-1), Burnley (2-1) and Bournemouth (4-0) have all been beaten pretty convincingly.

Expecting Wolves to do more is not backed up by recent form.

Not only have they have lost 6 in a row in all competitions, but Wolves have failed to score in 4 of those, including in each of the last 3 away Premier League games played. Those have ended in defeat at Sunderland (2-0), Fulham (3-0) and Chelsea (3-0) and Rob Edwards will have been really concerned with his first game in charge that resulted in another comfortable defeat, despite being at home against Crystal Palace.

Aston Villa have beaten Wolves 2-0 and 3-1 in each of the last two seasons at Villa Park and they should record a relatively straight-forward win on Sunday too.

Aston Villa 2-0 Wolves
