PREVIEW
Yesterday the San Francisco Giants opened up their 4 game series against the Cincinnati Reds with a 5-0 shutout win. That was their 4th straight shut-out win, a new franchise record. The Giants will try for yet another tonight, and while it isn't something I would bet on, their chances are good with the superior pitcher on the mound.
The Reds have Mike Leake pitching for them today. His record stands at 2-5 with a 4.46ERA. He has now been handed 4 straight no decisions but his pitching has gotten better, boasting a 2.97ERA in his 4 starts during June. Cincinnati will be pleased as he should likely restrict the Giants, who in turn will not be giving up many runs themselves.
Leake has pitched against the Giants 4 times, 3 times as a starter, and has a rather messy 5.68ERA although his record is 2-0 but clearly down to being bailed out by his offence.
The Giants counter with Matt Cain, who is 9-2 with a 2.27ERA. He's not been beaten through 10 starts now, and is off a very solid performance in his last outing, when he restricted Oakland to just 1 run while working 7 innings.
Cain has a 4-4 record against the Reds, with a 3.19ERA spanning 9 career starts. His last meeting with them was just over 2 months ago, when he gave up 3 runs in a little over 6 innings.
BETTING VERDICT
The Giants will not shut Cincinnati out, but they are in much better form and will likely restrict their scoring enough to earn yet another win, their 5th straight.
