The Giants still lead the NL West, but only just. They are 0.5 games ahead of San Diego, with the Rockies also not far behind.
The one thing we can expect is for the Giants to go for the win here, as any slip-up at this late stage could prove costly, as they place San Diego next in a series that will decide the fate of the division.
SF GIANTS
San Francisco start Matt Cain tonight. He has a 3.08 ERA in his 30 starts, which is impressive. His win-loss record is 12-10, no thanks to the hitters, who have not given him the runs to get his wins.
Fortunately for Cain, that stat has improved recently for the Giants, with the team scoring an average of almost 6 runs per game in his last 5 starts. It's no surprise that he has gone 5-0 in those matches.
In the 12 matches he has pitched in the 2nd half of the season, Cain has gone 6-2, with the Giants winning 10. Also encouraging is the fact that he is 5-2 with a 2.61ERA in 9 career starts against the Chicago Cubs.
CHICAGO CUBS
The Cubs have been on a tear of late as they won 8 of their last 9 road games. So this should be easy right? Wrong. The Chicago Cubs, funnily, do worse when laying at home! Since the start of August, they are just 7-16 in their home games.
Chicago will send Carlos Zambrano to the hill tonight, and although he is doing pretty well recently, it must be pointed out that his last 2 losses have been against San Diego and San Francisco, the two sides who are still going hell for leather to win their division!
Something tells me the Cubs bad home record, along with the Giants fight to keep their NL West lead, results in a win for the visitors.
