Everton
The opening weekend defeat to Leeds United feels a long time ago for Everton fans after some decent work in the transfer window and the team putting a solid run of results together. David Moyes has spoken about Everton's ambitions of becoming a regular contender for European Football and more, and he will be very happy with the start his team have made to the new season.
The Toffees return from the September international break in 5th place in the Premier League table and they have also progressed to the League Cup Third Round. Silverware is an important target for Moyes and the club, while Everton will be looking to keep a perfect record going at their new home ahead of the first Merseyside derby of the campaign.
Everton have won 3 games in a row in all competitions since the opening loss at Elland Road, and a deeper look at the form guide will show that the team have won 6 of their last 7 going back to last season. The side have opened the new Hill Dickinson Stadium with consecutive 2-0 wins over Brighton in the Premier League and Mansfield Town in the League Cup.
Adam Aznou, Nathan Patterson and Jarrad Branthwaite are hoping to return ahead of this fixture.
Aston Villa
Late work in the transfer window may have just given this Aston Villa squad a boost as they try and turn things around following a miserable August to open the new season. Unai Emery made it clear that the club have been under financial constraints in the summer, but keeping hold of Emiliano Martinez and Morgan Rogers is just as important as being able to bring in Victor Lindelof, Harvey Elliot and Jadon Sancho.
August could not really have gone much worse for Aston Villa who are 19th in the Premier League table and one of just four clubs still looking for a first League win of the season. They were well beaten last time out against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa have yet to score a League goal.
Aston Villa held on for a goalless draw with Newcastle United on the opening weekend, but they have since lost to Brentford and Crystal Palace and been beaten in 3 of their last 4 Premier League games. In fact they have failed to score in any of those fixtures and The Villans have lost 4 of their last 6 away games in all competitions.
Matty Cash picked up an injury on international duty and is a doubt, but Emiliano Martinez should be available having withdrawn from the last squad as rumours of a departure swirled around him. Ross Barkley, Boubacar Kamara and Andre Onana are hoping to be fit to travel to the North West.
Head to Head
Aston Villa beat Everton narrowly in both Premier League games last season.
Not only are Aston Villa unbeaten in 6 visits to Everton, but they have earned maximum points in 4 of the last 5 at Goodison Park.
Prediction
If the early form guide is anything to go by, Everton's poor run against Aston Villa at Goodison Park in recent years is not expected to travel across to their new Hill Dickinson Stadium home.
With 3 wins in a row behind them and Aston Villa having yet to score a League goal, Everton have been set as the favourites to win this Premier League game.
However, there are some underlying numbers that perhaps suggest that Everton have been a touch fortunate to have as many points as they do and that Aston Villa could have had a little more.
Unai Emery's team looked to be in control against Crystal Palace two weeks ago, but capitulated after giving away a Penalty. They should have at least scored once in the defeat at Brentford and things may have felt pretty differently.
New signings will give the squad a boost, even if they are not all going to be seen as regular starters, while Aston Villa will look a lot stronger if either Boubacar Kamara or Amadou Onana are able to play a part.
Everton should be given credit for the way they have responded to the 1-0 loss at Elland Road- Jack Grealish has made an early impact and will be a threat against his former club, while David Moyes has gotten the squad playing with a confidence that was seemingly lacking under previous manager Sean Dyche.
Going back to last season, Everton have won 6 of their last 7 games in all competitions and that deserves a lot of respect.
In saying that, Everton could have been beaten comfortably at Elland Road and were incredibly fortunate in the win over Brighton to open their new home. The visiting team missed some glorious chances, including a Penalty, on that day and there is still enough attacking quality within this Aston Villa squad to believe things will be turned around.
The record when visiting Everton in recent years will also give the squad a boost, even if those matches were at Goodison Park, and it feels like Aston Villa are being underestimated to earn some kind of positive result on Saturday afternoon.
