West Ham United
Graham Potter needed a big result after a poor start to the season and the pressure building, but even the manager has to have been surprised by returning from the City Ground with a 0-3 win under his and West Ham United's belt. Things will have eased around Potter, but this is not a patient fanbase and West Ham United need to back that win up with another over a fierce rival.
The Hammers are up to 16th in the Premier League table after earning their first points of the season in the big win at Nottingham Forest two weeks ago. However, there will be some mental demons to exorcise on Saturday as West Ham United return to the London Stadium where they were thumped 1-5 by Chelsea in the opening League fixture in East London.
West Ham United had opened the season with 3 straight defeats in all competitions and had conceded at least three goals in each of those, which made the win and clean sheet at the City Ground all the more surprising. They will be looking to snap a 6 game winless run at the London Stadium and West Ham United are also trying to avoid a third straight defeat here.
Niclas Fullkrug has returned from international duty with a knock that leaves him doubtful.
Tottenham Hotspur
Everything had gone pretty smoothly for Thomas Frank as the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur and the positive start to the Premier League season would have encouraged everyone associated with the club. Two weeks ago they were beaten for the first time in 90 minutes under the new manager and the news about Daniel Levy stepping down as Executive Chairman during the September international break has created a bit more uncertainty.
Despite the home loss to Bournemouth, Tottenham Hotspur are 4th in the early Premier League standings and have picked up 6 points from the first three fixtures played. Three of those have come from the first away League fixture completed at Manchester City, but Thomas Frank may learn a lot more about his squad as they look to bounce back from the defeat two weeks ago.
Tottenham Hotspur may have won the Europa League, but the Premier League form was poor under former manager Ange Postecoglou. They failed to win any of their last 6 away Premier League fixtures at the conclusion of last season and earned a single point in that run and that makes the win at the Etihad Stadium last month feel pretty important.
Yves Bissouma has been linked with a move to Turkey and is not expected to be involved, while long-term absentees Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison will be missing. Dominic Solanke has been dealing with an ankle injury and the hope is that the last fortnight has given him a chance to recover and take some part in this fixture.
Head to Head
Tottenham Hotspur took four points from West Ham United last season.
The game at the London Stadium ended 1-1 for the third year in a row.
West Ham United are now unbeaten in 5 at home against Spurs.
Prediction
They were involved in two contrasting results and performances in the final Premier League fixtures before the September international break, and it will be interesting to see if the momentum will have shifted after a two week gap between games.
Prior to those final games, Tottenham Hotspur had won 2 in a row, while West Ham United had lost all 3 fixtures played in all competitions.
However, it was The Hammers who upset the odds by winning at Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur were victims of an upset when losing at home to Bournemouth so there is all to prove on Saturday in the late afternoon televised game.
West Ham United have been able to contain this rival in recent home games, but Graham Potter is still under some pressure to help the team find some consistency. They impressed at the City Ground, but West Ham United had been incredibly poor the week before against Chelsea and set pieces proved to be their undoing.
Thomas Frank is a manager that makes every effort to exploit those situations and so Tottenham Hotspur can pose a big threat here.
They were poor in the home loss to Bournemouth, but new arrivals may offer more of a spark for the team and Tottenham Hotspur have shown something different under their new manager compared with the end of the last campaign with Ange Postecoglou at the helm.
It is Tottenham Hotspur who have scored first in each of the last 3 games at the London Stadium before being pegged back in 1-1 draws. Another sharing of the points cannot be ruled out, but West Ham United do look vulnerable at the back and one big result does not change that.
The midfield, and control of that area, is going to be really important and there is a feeling that Spurs will have the edge in that department. If they can find a way to get the ball out to some strong attacking players, Tottenham Hotspur can certainly hurt the hosts and the feeling is that they can bounce back from the poor outing last time out.
West Ham United have the capabilities to cause problems, but Graham Potter's team may have been in the right place at the right time when winning at the City Ground. Prior to that, they had been porous at the back and Tottenham Hotspur may do just enough to win in East London for the first time since November 2019.
