PREVIEW
The New York Jets will host the Dallas Cowboys on the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in what is sure to be an emotionally charged game, with the stadium not far from Ground Zero. There is also a bit of sibling rivalry bubbling beneath what is an important match, as the head coach of the Jets, Rex Ryan, is the twin brother of Rob Ryan, who has moved to the Dallas Cowboys to serve as defensive coordinator.
Jason Garrett is the man in charge of the Dallas Cowboys, who got rid of Wade Phillips after a disastrous 1-7 start. Garrett engineered a 5-3 run to end the season, but the damage had already been done.
Dallas have won 7 of the 9 meetings between the two sides, with the last coming on Thanksgiving 2007. This weekend, Garrett knows he has a problem on his hand, due to strength of his opponents defence, and a long injury list that means his side are rightly priced as underdogs.
Cornerback Terence Newman has a groin problem and is out, along with fellow cornerback Mike Jenkins, who has a knee injury. Add to that Right Tackle Tyron Smith, who was a 9th overall pick in the draft and now Garrett is looking at being forced to play a lot of young inexperienced players who will struggle against the Jets.
Bill Nagy, Phil Costa and Parnell might just make up the offensive line for the Cowboys and that is a problem. The Jets defence ranked 6th in the NFL in points allowed and were 3rd best in the nation in yards allowed. The Jets kept 7, that's almost half, their regular season opponents to under 300 total offensive yards!
Tony Romo will be starting as Dallas QB for the first time since breaking his collarbone back in October during that nightmare couple of months. How well he does here remains to be seen but against David Harris, who has over 100 tackles, I fear he might have a troublesome evening. Darrell Revis and new boy Muhammad Wilkerson make up the other men to keep an eye out on the Jets defence when Romo has the ball.
The Jets offence have no such problems as Mark Sanchez resumes QB duties to lead the team. In Shonn Green they have a promising RB, while LaDainian Tomlinson will be eager to rack up some yardage on Dallas and add to the 2 TDs he has against them over his career. Tomlinson needs just 259 rushing yards to better Jerome Bettis for 5th in the NFL all-time.
Also, former Giants WR Plaxico Burress will suit up and take to the field for the Jets, making this offence even stronger.
BETTING VERDICT
Listening to coach Rex Ryan you get a real feel for just how brutal and dominant he knows his defensive is going to be this season. They are at home against a banged up Cowboys offence.
I'm going with the Jets to score an emotional win tonight. Due to the injuries, I also recommend taking them to cover the spread.
