ACC action to kick off the day, with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets hosting the North Carolina Tar Heels. Both teams are a perfect 3-0 to start the season, but it is Georgia Tech that is ranked #25. Georgia Tech are favoured by 6.5 points.
North Carolina won their ACC opener against Virginia 28-17, the first time they've started their conference season with a win in 11 years. They come here after that win last weekend but will be running into a vastly superior team in Georgia Tech.
The Yellow Jackets destroyed Kansas 66-24 this weekend, rushing for a monstrous 604 yards. They gained 768 yards of total offence. Those are both new school records, and their 12.1 yards per carry is a new NCAAF record!
North Carolina is allowing 308 yards of total offense per game and gave up 460 yards to Virginia last week, 170 of which came via the ground game. Prior to that they had done well defending the rush, allowing just 30 yards rushing but that was against James Madison and Rutgers.
Georgia Tech has an offence that is capable of coming out and running right through and over their opponents. They have scored on their first play in each of the last 3 games and are gashing opponents for 428 rushing yards per game, which leaves them top in the nation.
Orwin Smith has got 270 yards on just 12 carries with 4 TDs and Synjyn Days has 214 yards and 4TDs too. David Sims has 205 yards and 3TDs. Then there is the QB Tevin Washington, who has thrown for 637 yards and 7 TDs on a mere 28 attempts! Washington is a dangerous weapon as he also runs the ball and that is amazing for the Yellow Jackets when they get into opponents red-zone.
Then there is the Georgia Tech defence, which is not getting enough attention due to the spotlight on the teams brutal offence. The Yellow Jackets D has surrendered just 66 points and 335 yards of total offence in 3 games and should test North Carolina QB Bryn Renner. Renner was instrumental in leading his team to their 2-0 record.
BETTING VERDICT
Renner will be key here for North Carolina. If he gets throttled, the Tar Heels may well get beaten by double digits. I feel the G. Tech win is in the offing, so with the spread set at 6.5 I will suggest that too as a side bet.
