Analysis:Sampdoria are playing some of their best football at the moment and are now harbouring hopes of playing in the Champions League. They will welcome Livorno who are battling to stay in Serie A and have been winless in their last five matches in Serie A.
At the moment Sampdoria are level with Milan (before Milan played their match) and are looking to play football in Europe next season. After beating Empoli 2-0, they are also just four points below Fiorentina and knows that a win here could put them into a Champions League spot if Fiorentina were to slip up.
The home side have managed four wins and two draws from their last six games played and this is a remarkable achievement despite the absence of star striker Antonio Cassano due to suspension. Sampdoria knows that they cannot slip up if they are to play in the UEFA Cup at least. Having lost just once at home this season, Walter Novellino’s men will start this match as favourites here.
As for Livorno, their fate is still undecided after managing just a goalless draw against Siena in the Tuscan derby last weekend. The visitors are coming into this match without a win since 2nd of March and are stuck in the 16th spot in Serie A standings.
Competition at the bottom is really tight and their defence has not helped them as they have conceded 45 goals to date this season. Though a win here would be good for them, but it is asking a lot of them even to get a draw here.
Their last meeting was won by Livorno in week 13 when they managed a 3-1 win. But if we go back the following year, Sampdoria won this tie 4-1 when they played host.
And for this match they are boosted by the return of Antonio Cassano after he has served his ban. This would ease the pressure on strikers Vincenzo Montella or Claudio Bellucci who has been helping them get the goals in Cassano’s absence. They will miss the services of midfielder Daniele Franceschini as he is out suspended but Argentine defender Hugo Campagnaro will feature after shaking off a minor knock.
As for Livorno, they are missing the services of ex-Juventus midfielder Giuliano Giannichedda who is out for the rest of the season. Apart from him, Coach Giancarlo Camolese has an otherwise full squad at his disposal and will go with a 3-5-2 formation with the inexperienced Alessandro Diamanti linking up with Francesco Tavano in attack.
