Everton (14th) Home 2-2-1 8:9
Everton are struggling. Injuries and a fixture pile up have crippled them in recent weeks and they just don’t have the squad to deal with it.
The Toffees haven’t won since the 1st October, losing at Benfica in Europe, Spurs in the Carling Cup, Bolton in the league.
Add in depressing home draws with Stoke and Wolves and you have a team gasping for a break in the fixtures to tend the wounded and regroup. They won’t get that this week though.
After this game they have another midweek tie – home to Benfica. Teams like Everton are often a bit iffy in the weekends around European ties at the best of times, but with ten players still missing or doubtful for this game against Villa, Everton won’t be looking forward to this one.
Aston Villa (7th) Away : 2-1-1 6:4
Aston Villa have been pretty disappointing themselves in their last two outings, both away days at Sunderland in the Carling Cup and Wolves in the league.
Both performances ended in draws in the 90 minutes and Villa look tired. The extra time and penalties Villa needed to eventually see off Sunderland in midweek won’t have helped that.
Villa themselves have only got one win to show for October, albeit this was an impressive 2-1 win at home to Chelsea. Heskey, Warnock and Reo-Coker are the new injuries to report but may be OK for the game. Of these only Warnock is a regular anyway.
Head to Head
Villa have an impressive record of 2 wins, 2 draws and just one defeat here in the last five league meetings, including a 3-2 win last December.
The Verdict
Everton are drowning in games and injuries at the moment, and are playing a team they have struggled against on home turf in recent years.
Villa have not been at their best recently and look to be a better bet at home this year than last where the opposite was true.
But Villa's excellent record at Goodison does stand out.
Usually in betting if a price looks too good to be true it usually is, this may be the case again here but prices approaching 2/1 for Villa to pile more misery on Everton are begging to be taken.
