2009-12-29 - Aston Villa vs Liverpool
A Sports Betting Pick by Cruiser
Analysis:Liverpool are desperate to finish fourth in the Premiership so they will be eager to beat Aston Villa in this must win match at Villa Park. The Reds are having a miserable season by their standards and risk missing out on a highly lucrative place in the UEFA Champions League, with Villa one of the sides to take over that spot.
As it stands now, Aston Villa are five points over Liverpool in the table and a win at Villa Park would leave Liverpool with a huge task if they are to get into the Champions League spot.
Villa though are coming into this match on a 3-0 defeat against Arsenal last Sunday. Captain Cesc Fabregas was the hero as he scored two goals before injuring his hamstring and that ended an eight match unbeaten run for Villa.
Now Liverpool will be hoping to pile the pressure on Villa when they travel to Villa Park. The Reds will eb confident as they have a good record against Villa. Even though Villa won 3-1 at Anfield earlier this season, but that result ended a run of 15 games without victory against the Reds.
Liverpool goes into this tie being unbeaten in their last 11 league games at Villa Park, with last season's clash ending 0-0, and captain Steven Gerard has a good record against Villa scoring nine Premier League goals against Villa - more than against any other side.
But take note that Benitez is aware that Liverpool have been dreadful away from home this season, and their only win on the road in their last six top-flight outings came against rivals Everton in November.
As for the team news, Benitez must make a decision whether to continue with Italian playmaker Alberto Aquilani in midfield, after he started his first league game in the 2-0 win against Wolves on Boxing Day. The Spaniard did come off the game with a minor hamstring injury and might not be risked here.
The Reds will be without Javier Mascherano who is suspended although Dirk Kuyt is expected to return to the starting line-up. Kuyt only played the last 14 minutes against Wolves after being rested by Benitez but will come back to the starting lineup here.
As for the home side Villa, Ashley Young as the winger is suspended after picking up five bookings. Martin O'Neill is expected to make make few changes to the side that was beaten at the Emirates. John Carew could start ahead of Emile Heskey, while Nigel Reo-Coker, James Collins, Habib Beye, Steve Sidwell and Fabian Delph may start here.
