The Yankees have lost 5 of their last 6 matches, yet are huge favourites here as they entertain the Royals, who are giving up less runs on the road than the Yankees are at home. Go figure.
The Royals are in town to begin a 3 game series, allowing an average of 3.33 on the road. The Royals have Felipe Paulino pitching today, with a 1-1 record and a 1.93ERA inspiring confidence. Paulino has pitched 3 starts so far, and one of those was against the Yankees about 2 weeks ago. He gave up no runs over 6 innings, and also managed to blank the offensively sound Baltimre Orioles over 7 innings, striking out 9 batters! He's facing a Yankees side that is coming off a 5-2 loss yesterday against the Cincinnati Reds, their 5 loss in 6 matches and the 5th time in 8 games they have been held to 2 runs or less.
The Yankees go with Hiroki Kuroda, who is 3-5 with a 4.50ERA. His last start saw him thumped around by Toronto, who hit 3 homers off him to grab an 8-1 win, with Kuroda allowing 7 of them. He's already pitched against Kansas City and lost.
The Royals just lost their series at home against Arizona but had plenty of chances to score runs, but they went begging. The main thing is they are getting themselves into positions where they can score heavily, and I feel this team has improved a lot. They certainly have the better pitcher on the hill.
New York are giving up 4.23 at home and 4.44 overall and with Kuroda on the mound they might well give up at least 5 again. More so because their bullpen is a mess thanks to injuries. They will surely give up runs late on, no matter who is ahead.
