PREVIEW
The New Orleans Saints kick off their season in the Superdome, hosting the Washington Redskins, who they haven't faced in almost 3 years. That game ended 33-30 to the Saints. I have a feeling they will rack up a similar number of points this time again.
Washington come here with a new big name QB, Robert Griffin III, who was a 2nd overall pick in the draft, after Andrew Luck. Griffin, who was nothing short of brilliant in his time at Baylor, will definitely have an impact on the Redskins results, improving them from last year, when their losses went into double digits. In fact, they have lost 41 games in the last 4 years, failing to make the playoffs. A lot will be expected of Griffin, and whether he delivers or not, I want to focus on who I do know will perform. Drew Brees.
Brees has signed a new contract with the Saints which earns him $100m over the next 5 years. Time to start earning that, and I don't think he will disappoint. Brees had 5476 passing yards last term with 46 TDs and just 14 picks, so you know what he's likely to do here. In the Superdome, with this being an opening game, you would expect motivation, but with the whole suspension palava you just know this side will come out fired the F up.
New Orleans were 1st in the NFL last year in overall offence, gaining 467.1 ypg. They led on passing yards too, 334.2 per game and were the leagues 2nd highest scorers with 34.2 points per game. And if you think they're a one trick pony, think again. The Saints were the 6th best rushing team in the league with 132.9 yards per game.
Griffin, and his Redskins, are going to need to win a shootout here, and that is just not possible. Consider this, last year the Saints went 9-0 ATS at home, and they scored an average of 42 points while doing so!
BETTING VERDICT
I don't think Washington will win, or even cover. But I'll leave the unknown quantity that is Griffin alone for this week and go with the Saints, who I know will score a bunch.
