All the talk in the build up to this two game InterLeague series has been about the fact that the Dodgers will be playing in the Bronx for the first time in 32 years. This was a big series that has sadly been left untouched for that length of time and all of the media are talking about one that should hopefully be a more regular occurrence going forward.
Both teams will be focused on the field as they look to build some momentum. The New York Yankees (38-31) have been struggling a little bit of late and they are 3 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the American League East as they struggle to overcome the injuries in the batting lineup.
The LA Dodgers (29-39) are still ten games under 0.500 and that leaves them in the basement of the National League West, a Division where all four other teams have winning records. The Dodgers are 2-6 in their last 8 games and all the buzz of the big takeover last season has been lost on the roster this time around.
Hyun-Jin Ryu will be given the ball for the Dodgers and he brings in a 6-2 record with a 2.85 ERA in his rookie season. However, he gave up 11 hits in his last outing, the most so far this season, and Ryu has definitely been less effective on the road than he has at home.
On the road, Ryu has a 4.10 ERA in his six starts this season.
However, the Yankees, who snapped a 5 game losing run with a win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, will be sending an inconsistent pitcher to the mound themselves in this game. Phil Hughes has a 3-5 record with a 4.89 ERA this season and he has had 7 quality starts and been pulled from 5 other starts before the sixth inning to highlight those inconsistencies.
Hughes is 1-3 with a 6.52 ERA from his six starts at Yankee Stadium this season, but he may feel more comfortable knowing the likes of Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford will be missing from the Dodgers' batting lineup.
