Heckert spent the last nine seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, including the previous four as general manager. Before that, the 42-year-old spent 10 years in the personnel department of the Miami Dolphins. This is the first big signing for new Browns president Mike Holmgren, who announced last Thursday that head coach Eric Mangini will return for the 2010 season.
The Browns also named Bryan Wiedmeier as executive vice president of business operations. "I am eager to get started with the Browns, a team for which my father worked and that I rooted for growing up.Working alongside some of the most experienced and successful people in this business in Mike, Eric Mangini and Bryan, I believe we have the foundation in place to re-establish the Browns as one of the top franchises in the NFL," Heckert said.Heckert, who was under contract with Philadelphia through 2011, brings a very successful resume to Cleveland. During his 17-year stay in the NFL, the teams with which he has been associated have experienced 16 winning seasons, won eight division titles and made 13 postseason trips, including five NFC Championshipgameappearances (2001-04, 2008 seasons) in addition to representing the NFC at Super Bowl XXXIX following the 2004 season.Cleveland won its last four games to finish 5-11 in Mangini's first year as the team's head coach. The Browns started 1-7 before then-general manager George Kokinis, a friend of Mangini, was fired in early November.Wiedmeier comes to Cleveland following a 29-year stint as a member of the Dolphins' front office. He was the club's president and chief operating officer from 2006-08.

Dolphins dump defensive coordinator Pasqualoni 01/11 19:15:37 ET
Davie, FL (Sports Network) - The Miami Dolphins fired defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni on Monday. The Dolphins ranked 22nd in the NFL this past season in yards allowed per game, and were tied for 25th in the league in points allowed per game (24.4), as the team missed the playoffs with a 7-9 record.
Pasqualoni had been Miami's defensive coordinator for the past two seasons."I want to thank Paul for his services to the team, and I want to wish him the best," said Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano.Pasqualoni, who also spent three years in the Dallas Cowboys organization, spent 29 seasons as a coach at the collegiate level prior to entering the NFL ranks. The former Penn State linebacker (1968-71) was head coach at Syracuse University from 1991-2004, leading the Orange to a 107-59-1 record and nine bowl appearances. Also on Monday, long-time Dolphins executive Bryan Wiedmeier joined the Browns' organization as the executive vice president of business operations."It is with mixed emotions that we accept the resignation of Bryan Wiedmeier," said Dolphins chief executive officer Mike Dee. "Bryan's contributions to the Dolphin franchise during almost three decades of service to the team were extraordinary and he will always remain a significant part of Dolphin history. While he will be sorely missed, we are excited for Bryan, his wife, Mary, and their family for his new opportunity in Cleveland and we wish him the very best with his new endeavor. We look forward to welcoming Bryan back next fall when the Browns come to Miami.
Report: Carroll resigns at USC to take Seattle job 01/11 02:32:50 ET
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Pete Carroll has reportedly resigned as head coach at Southern California and will become the next coach of the Seattle Seahawks. A source told the Los Angeles Daily News of Carroll's resignation, but USC didn't comment on the report. Later, the LA Times reported Carroll would accept the job with the Seahawks. The Times reported players and coaches learned of Carroll's intentions via text message from an assistant coach.Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke was reportedly in Los Angeles Sunday to finalize a contract for Carroll. An earlier report from the Daily News said the deal was for five years and worth between $6.5 million and $7 million per season.
The courtship of the 58-year-old former head coach in New England and with the New York Jets began in earnest after the sudden firing of Jim Mora after one season on Friday.Carroll owns a 33-31 record in four seasons as an NFL head coach. The Jets went 6-10 in 1994 before Carroll was fired, and the Patriots were 27-21 from 1997-99 before he was again ousted. His collegiate resume is much stronger. He became head coach at USC in late 2000 and has won two national championships during his tenure. His program has come under question lately with investigations into NCAA rules violations, one including star running back Joe McKnight, who missed the Emerald Bowl due to questions into whether he violated NCAA rules for driving a Land Rover owned by an area businessman.McKnight recently announced his decision to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL Draft.Another continuing investigation involves former star running back Reggie Bush.On the field, Carroll built a recent dynasty in Southern California with highly-regarded recruiting classes and Pac-10 titles.During his tenure at USC, Carroll compiled a 97-19 record. The team went a disappointing 9-4 this season, which included the Emerald Bowl victory over Boston College. The Trojans were playing in a non-BCS bowl game for the first time since 2001.Oregon State's Mike Riley was rumored to be a candidate to take the USC job once Carroll left, but that was squashed Sunday night when the Beavers announced a contract extension for Riley.Mora guided the Seahawks to a record of 5-11 this past season, ending the campaign with a four-game losing streak. Mora had taken over following the retirement of Mike Holmgren, who had been the Seahawks' coach from 1999-2008 and ended his one-year hiatus recently by accepting the team president position with the Cleveland Browns.
The Seahawks struggled the past two years, combining for just nine wins after five consecutive playoff seasons, including a Super Bowl berth following the 2005 campaign. Not only were the Seahawks looking for a new head coach, but the team is also searching for a permanent general manager. Former GM Tim Ruskell resigned in early December after five years with the organization, and vice president of player personnel Ruston Webster is currently serving as the interim general manager.
Dansby's TD in OT caps wild Cardinals win over Packers 01/10 20:18:34 ET
Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Karlos Dansby caught Aaron Rodgers' fumble out of the air and returned it 17 yards to put a stunning end to the game, giving the Cardinals a wild 51-45 overtime win against the Packers in the highest scoring postseason game in NFL history.
Michael Adams knocked the ball away from Rodgers, who then actually kicked the ball in the air with his right foot. Dansby was in perfect position to grab it and run unimpeded into the end zone, sending the NFC West-champion Cardinals into next weekend's divisional round. Arizona will play the top-seeded Saints in New Orleans. The loss was crushing for the Packers, who had made up a 21-point deficit thanks to Rodgers, who threw for 422 yards and four touchdowns.Rodgers' counterpart, Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner, was even better, completing 29-of-33 passes for five touchdowns, as the teams combined for an NFL playoff record in total yards.
