Flyers try to rebound in Game 2 against Blackhawks 05/31 10:53:30 ET

(Sports Network) - After losing an offensive battle in the opener, the Philadelphia Flyers will try to bounce back tonight, when they visit the Chicago Blackhawks for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals at United Center .

The best-of-seven series kicked off Saturday night in Chicago and the Western Conference champion Blackhawks won a wild 6-5 decision to take the early lead. Neither team held more than a one-goal lead in the back-and-forth affair, but Chicago forward Tomas Kopecky scored the lone goal of the third period to lead his team to victory.

Danny Briere had a goal and three assists and Scott Hartnell added a goal with two assists for Philadelphia, which has overcome a bevy of obstacles to reach the Cup Finals for the first time in 13 years. The Flyers haven't won it all since 1975 and, like Chicago, Philadelphia has been defeated in each of its last five trips to the Cup Finals.

Michael Leighton, drafted by Chicago in 1999, didn't get much help from a leaky Flyers' defense and was pulled in the second period after allowing five goals on 20 shots."I'm totally disappointed in the way I played," Leighton said. "I felt all right. Every time they had a good chance they scored."

Brian Boucher made 11 saves the rest of the way but allowed the decisive tally in his first action since injuring both knees in Game 5 of the semifinals against Boston on May 10. Leighton will get the start again tonight for the Flyers."We've got to be a little bit better defensively than we were," Laviolette admitted. "It wasn't a lot of chances. It was probably a dozen chances for them. But some of them were point blank. We have to tighten it up right in front of our goal."

One of the biggest storylines heading into this series concerned the excellent postseason play of both teams' young captains, but neither Chicago's Jonathan Toews nor Philadelphia's Mike Richards had a night to remember on Saturday. Toews, who is leading the NHL with 26 points this playoff year, failed to register a point and was also a minus-3 in Game 1. Richards, who has 21 points in this postseason, had zero points and a minus-2 rating in the opener.The Blackhawks are 6-3 as the host in the playoffs after going 29-8-4 in the Windy City during the regular season. Philadelphia had a sub-par 17-21-3 road mark this year, and is 5-5 as the road team in the postseason.

The Flyers will host the next two games of this series, including Game 3 on Wednesday night.Philly and the Blackhawks faced each other just once this year, but the third period of that regular-season battle was hinted at the type of offensive showcase that unfolded in Game 1. The Flyers pulled out a 3-2 home victory over the 'Hawks on March 13 and all five goals came in the third period.The only playoff meeting between Chicago and Philadelphia was in the 1971 quarterfinals, a series that was swept by the Blackhawks

Stosur ousts Henin; Serena lands in French quarters 05/31 10:31:43 ET

Paris, France (Sports Network) - Ever-improving Aussie Samantha Stosur upended four-time champion Justine Henin, while world No. 1 Serena Williams handled 18th-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer in straight sets on Monday to ease into the quarterfinals at the French Open.

The seventh-seeded Stosur dropped the first set against the 22nd-seeded Henin before fighting back for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 decision on Court Lenglen. Stosur knocked out Henin on her second match point, as the Aussie landed an overhead winner to seal the deal.

Stosur blew her first match point, which was set-up by a netted Henin backhand, with an untimely double fault. The 26-year-old Stosur prevailed in 1 hour, 46 minutes by striking 12 more winners (26-14) and tallying one more service break (4-3) than her Belgian counterpart on Day 9.

Stosur will appear in her second straight French Open quarterfinal and try to reach a second straight semifinal on the famed red clay. The big-serving Stosur's surprise victory prevented a highly-anticipated Williams-Henin clash here, as Stosur, instead, will face the powerful American in the round of eight.

Henin was appearing in her first French Open, which she captured in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007, since '07, as she retired from tennis just two weeks before Roland Garros 2008 commenced.The diminutive Henin, who will turn 28 on Tuesday, returned to the WTA Tour back in January and lost to her arch-rival Williams in the Aussie Open finale that month.Meanwhile, Williams was an easy 6-2, 6-2 winner over the overmatched Peer and reached the quarterfinals here for a second consecutive year and seventh time overall. The reigning Aussie Open and Wimbledon champion fired six aces and needed just over an hour to record the victory, as she recovered from a third-round hiccup.Williams needed all three sets to beat Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova while battling an illness in the last round.The 28-year-old Williams is a 12-time major champion who captured her lone French Open title in her lone finale here back in 2002

Paris, France (Sports Network) - Third-seeded Novak Djokovic reached the quarterfinals at the 2010 French Open on Monday.The former Australian Open champion drove out unseeded Robby Ginepri 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 on Day 9 at Roland Garros. Ginepri was the last American standing in the men's draw here.The 23-year-old Djokovic broke Ginepri five times in the 2-hour, 17-minute affair.The former world No. 2 and two-time French Open semifinalist Djokovic will now appear in his fourth quarterfinal here in the last five years.Djokovic's quarterfinal opponent will be 22nd-seeded Austrian lefthander Jurgen Melzer, who got past unseeded Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the fourth round. Gabashvili toppled American star Andy Roddick in the third round on the famed red clay here last week.The 29-year-old Melzer will now compete in his first-ever major quarterfinal. The southpaw had never reached the fourth round at a Grand Slam prior to this particular fortnight.Djokovic is 2-0 lifetime against Melzer and the two have never met on clay
