Anyone who has watched the 6-2, 225-pound Bryant on the field knows he has the skills to be a high-level NFL receiver. He has terrific hands, is a solid route runner, and desirable speed for a man his size.
The biggest questions about Bryant, of course, have come off the field. He missed most of the 2009 season at Oklahoma State after lying to the NCAA about his dealings with former NFL player Deion Sanders, a known middle man between players and NFL agents.
There were also some mixed feelings among scouts about Bryant's ability to be a good teammate, to show up to meetings, and how an unstable family life might contribute to his maturation as a pro. The much-publicized question Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland asked Bryant concerning his mother being a prostitute during the 2010 combine ultimately (and rightfully) reflected worse on Ireland than on Bryant, but certainly didn't dismiss any of the skepticism about the player.
But, as Phillips' statements suggest, the Cowboys have been nothing other than happy with Bryant thus far. The receiver, who is expected to start from day one in Dallas, seems to be taking both the responsibility and hype in stride as well.
"I'm having a lot of fun out there," Bryant said last month. "I'm having a lot of fun with everything.

Line of Scrimmage: NFL GameChangers '10: Wide Receivers 07/05 09:40:36 ET
By Tony Moss, NFL Editor Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Everything is bigger in Texas, especially the hype.
What, do you think the following statement, about a rookie who had been on the team less than week, would have come out of the mouth of the head coach in Cleveland, or Buffalo, or New England? "Dez Bryant is an absolute talent," Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips told the media after his initial rookie-camp glimpse of first-round wideout Dez Bryant. "You don't get to be around many players that come in and look that good that early.

"I'm enjoying everything. I feel comfortable. I feel like I've been here a long time. I haven't had this feeling in a long time. I feel like I'm 100 percent back." Below, as the third installment of our eight-part "GameChangers" series, we look at five incoming wide receivers who will enter their first year in a new uniform as central figures in their team's 2010 development: 5. Demaryius Thomas, Broncos (rookie, Georgia Tech) - Though his selection would ultimately be overshadowed by Denver's selection of Tim Tebow minutes later, it's important to remember that the Broncos passed up Bryant in the first round in order to select the slightly bigger (6-3, 229), but considerably less polished Thomas. Given that the team traded away its best offensive weapon when it dealt Brandon Marshall to the Dolphins, it will be important for Thomas to navigate the sharp learning curve and make an early contribution to the attack. The 2009 All-American played in a triple-option offense at Georgia Tech, missed the combine with a broken foot, and his hands and route-running are not yet in line with expectations for a No. 1 NFL receiver. But if he doesn't develop in time for 2010, Denver is looking at the less-than-feared Eddie Royal and Jabar Gaffney as its starting receivers.
4. Antonio Bryant, Bengals (free agent, from Buccaneers) - Optimistic Bengal fans were overjoyed when the team signed Bryant to a four-year, $28 million deal in March, as it gave Cincinnati an instant upgrade at the No. 2 receiver slot over the disappointing Laveranues Coles. But the pessimists in the Queen City (and there are many, given the history of this team) will tell you that the journeyman Bryant has posted only two 1,000-yard seasons since breaking into the league in 2002, that the Bengals may not have improved their offensive line enough to better their NFL rank of 26th in passing offense last year, and that the egos of Bryant and No. 1 receiver Chad Ochocinco may have some trouble co-existing. Stay tuned, because this one could break either way.
3. Dez Bryant, Cowboys (rookie, Oklahoma State) - Bryant's presence creates an interesting dilemma for Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, who is likely to ask Miles Austin to move to the slot after posting an 81-catch, 1,320-yard, Pro Bowl season primarily at the "Z" receiver position last year. The notoriously disappointing Roy Williams served mostly as the "X," but could move over to the "Y" (or is it "Why?"), which would effectively make Bryant the team's No. 1 receiver. It would also make Williams, who signed a six-year, $54 million contract after being obtained in exchange for multiple high-level draft choices two years ago, Dallas' fourth receiving option behind Bryant, Austin, and tight end Jason Witten.
2. Anquan Boldin, Ravens (trade, from Cardinals) - Ravens fans had been clamoring for the team to upgrade its receiving talent for years, so the March trade that brought Boldin to Baltimore in exchange for third- and fourth-round draft picks was greeted with tremendous excitement. Whether Boldin is the final piece to a Super Bowl puzzle for the Ravens is highly debatable, but the presence of a physical, five-time 1,000-yard receiver alongside fellow newcomer Donte' Stallworth, the returning Derrick Mason, and promising rookie tight ends Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta will at the very last enhance the Ravens' vertical abilities. Thanks in part to Boldin, the era of the Baltimore offense being a drain on the team's fine defense is a decidedly bygone one now.
1. Brandon Marshall, Dolphins (trade, from Broncos) - Say what you want about Marshall's questionable character or ailing hips, but the guy has been a remarkably productive and consistent NFL receiver. He brings three consecutive 100-catch seasons with him to Miami - only four other players in NFL history have done that - and he's done it despite working with the developing Jay Cutler followed by the mediocre Kyle Orton. There's little reason to expect Marshall won't thrive in South Beach, where he'll be the unquestioned No. 1 offensive weapon on a team with a fluid running back situation and a dearth of other quality receiving options. As for his diva ways, well, he'll be working for Bill Parcells in Miami, so don't expect Marshall to get a very long leash with which to hang himself.
EUROPEAN TOUR BARCLAYS SCOTTISH OPEN - Loch Lomond Golf Club, Glasgow, Scotland - World No. 2 Phil Mickelson headlines a strong field at the Barclays Scottish Open this week. Mickelson will be competing on the Scottish Open for the sixth time in his career. He skipped last year's tournament while his wife, Amy, and his mother both started treatment for breast cancer. Playing against a strong field, Mickelson could take the No. 1 spot in the world rankings from Tiger Woods with either a win or a solo second place finish this week. He will be joined at Loch Lomond by players like three-time major champions Ernie Els and Vijay Singh, 2009 U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover, 2009 PGA Championship winner Y.E. Yang, Camilo Villegas and reigning U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell. While Mickelson was tending to family matters last year, Martin Kaymer captured his second win in two weeks. He opened and closed with two-under 69s en route to a two-shot win over two players.Kaymer won the Open de France the week before and became the second back-to- back winner of the 2009 season on the European Tour. Golf Channel will have coverage starting at 9:30 a.m. (et) on Thursday and Friday, while action starts at 9 a.m. on the weekend. The European Tour will remain in Scotland next week for the British Open Championship.Stewart Cink closed with a one-under 69 at Turnberry last year to force a playoff with Tom Watson, who bogeyed the final hole. Cink cruised in the playoff for his first major championship title.
PGA TOUR JOHN DEERE CLASSIC, TPC Deere Run, Silvis, Illinois - World No. 4 Steve Stricker returns to the TPC Deere Run this week to defend his title at the John Deere Classic. Stricker opened with an even-par 71 last year, but followed with a 61 en route to a three-stroke win over three players, including former Masters champion Zach Johnson. The second-round 61 came on Saturday after Friday's action was washed out by rain. That forced players to complete both the third and final rounds on Sunday. The win was Stricker's second of the season and sixth on the PGA Tour. He has since picked up two more titles. With many of the top players competing at the Scottish Open, or taking the week off prior to the British Open, Stricker is one of three players ranked in the top 20 in the world competing this week, and one of seven ranked in the top 50.He will be joined at the TPC Deere Run by Zach Johnson, Tim Clark, Kenny Perry, Rickie Fowler, K.J. Choi and Bubba Watson. Golf Channel will have action from 3-6 p.m. (et) the first two days, while CBS will be on air the same time for the final two rounds. With the best of the best in Scotland next week for the British Open, the remainder of the PGA Tour will be in Nevada for the Reno-Tahoe Open, where John Rollins won by three strokes last year.
