Football ; England : Premier League
Saturday 13th November 2010 – Kickoff 3pm
Newcastle United take on struggling Fulham at St James' Park on Saturday knowing that a win here could give them a safety cushion in the Europa League qualifying spot above rivals Bolton.
Newcastle United (5th)
Newcastle stormed into fifth place in the league following a four-match unbeaten run which included three straight wins over West Ham 2-1 away, a 5-1 thumping over arch-rivals Sunderland at home and a great 1-0 away win at The Emirates disposing of Arsenal in an unlikely victory.
This sequence was then interrupted by visitors Blackburn Rovers who won 2-1 at St James', which left the Toon Army non-plussed.
However, the Magpies have the perfect opportunity to bounce back when Fulham visit on Saturday, and they'll be looking for more consistency in front of their home fans – starting on Saturday I reckon.
Newcastle United's home form is 2-1-3 15/9, with only Chelsea (17 goals) scoring higher at home. Their scoring charts are spearheaded by striker Andy Carroll (7 goals, 2 assists) who recently earned an England call-up and midfielder Kevin Nolan (7 goals).
Striker Shola Ameobi (3 goals, 1 assist) has also notched, along with controversial midfielder Joey Barton (1 goal, 4 assists) who has provided the bulk of their creativity.
Fulham (15th)
Today's visitors, Fulham, are still seeking their first away win in the Premier League this season, and indeed have only won once in their last seven matches (home & away) - that was a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic at Craven Cottage at the end of October.
The Cottagers away record stands at 0-4-2 5/7 and sit precariously close to the edges of the relegation places. Goals have been in short supply for the London outfit, their leading scorer Clint Dempsey with a paltry four goals – only one of which has come away from home.
Fulham's form and lack of goals has shown rather obviously, their dependence on striker Bobby Zamora who is currently injured.
The Betting Verdict :
Newcastle United often have that 12th man in the shape of their loud and loyal vocal support, and given Fulham's lack of firepower up front, the Geordies should record another home win here.
