Liverpool v Ipswich Town
Football: English Premier League
Saturday 25th January 2025 - Kick Off 3pm

Liverpool

They looked to be running out of ideas and about to drop two more points in the Premier League title race, but Darwin Nunez found his finishing touch in injury time at the Gtech Community Stadium last Saturday. That would have had Liverpool fans bouncing and the spring in the step would have been that much higher after seeing main title rivals Arsenal drop two points instead, despite leading Aston Villa 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium later in the afternoon.

It all means Liverpool are back to 6 points clear at the top of the Premier League table and they also have a game in hand to be played in mid-February. A top two Seed has been secured in the Champions League Knock Out Rounds to keep the momentum behind Liverpool who have a 7-2-1 record at Anfield in the top flight.

Liverpool made harder work of Lille than perhaps they needed to on Tuesday in the Champions League, but they won and have won 3 of their last 4 games in all competitions. The Reds have drawn 2 of their last 3 at Anfield in the Premier League, but Liverpool have won 12 of 14 here in all competitions following the victory over Lille.

Curtis Jones set up the opener on Tuesday, but picked up a knock and is a doubt. Both Joe Gomez and Diogo Jota are expected to miss out.

Ipswich Town

Matches against the likes of Manchester City are not going to decide Ipswich Town's fate as far as Premier League survival is concerned, but the heavy loss will have dented confidence and that is a bigger issue for Kieran McKenna to address. The manager would have certainly have hoped for an 'easier' match than this visit to Anfield as he looks to pick his players up from a 0-6 home defeat.

The heavy defeat to Manchester City has left Ipswich Town in 18th place in the Premier League table, and their goal difference is now 4 worse than Wolves who also have 16 points. The Tractor Boys do have a 2-3-5 away record, which means they have more away wins than home ones this season, and Ipswich Town have scored 12 goals and conceded 19 in those matches.

Ipswich Town would have been feeling pretty good after putting together a 3 game unbeaten run in all competitions, but they have since been beaten pretty comfortably by Brighton and Manchester City. Both defeats have been suffered at Portman Road, and Ipswich Town will head to the North West having picked up 4 points from a possible 9 in their last 3 away League games.

Kalvin Phillips is available for selection having been ineligible to face his parent club last Sunday.

Head to Head

Ipswich Town offered plenty of threat when hosting Liverpool on the opening weekend, but they were eventually overwhelmed in a 0-2 defeat.

Liverpool have won 1 of their last 4 home games against Ipswich Town in normal time, but are hosting them in a League game at Anfield for the first time since a 5-0 win in May 2002.

Prediction

After a weekend where Liverpool earned a late win and main title rivals blew a 2-0 home lead, Arne Slot's team look to be back on track as favourites to win the Premier League.

Champions League progress has been made through to the Last 16 and Liverpool are still involved in both domestic Cup competitions as Slot looks to oversee a season that even the most optimistic of Liverpool fan could not have expected after Jurgen Klopp moved on.

The win over Lille on Tuesday allowed the manager to make some changes and his Liverpool team should be very ready to go on Saturday as they look to keep the pressure on those chasing them in the Premier League standings.

A home game against Ipswich Town fresh off of their crushing home defeat to Manchester City gives Liverpool an opportunity to build on recent momentum and they should be more than capable of doing that.

Liverpool have won a lot of matches at Anfield and they continue to score a lot of goals, which gives them a serious edge over most of their rivals in the title race. They will have respect for an Ipswich Town team that have been a little more organised away from Portman Road compared with their home form, while Kieran McKenna's team have earned double the wins on their travels compared with in front of the home fans.

Avoiding heavy losses has been a feature of Ipswich Town's away League fixtures, but they have recently failed to score in defeats at Nottingham Forest and Arsenal.

Arne Slot's team have not been as solid at the back as they would have liked in recent weeks, which has led to dropped points, but this is an opportunity to earn a clean sheet to back up the one they earned at Brentford last weekend. They should have the majority of the ball and Ipswich Town's confidence will have been dented by the defeat to Manchester City, even if the away team have nothing to lose here.

Ipswich Town's game against Southampton next week looks a massive one for the club, but they will do very well to make an impact on this game, let alone actually earning a positive result to take into that fixture.
