Arsenal

The players showed character in coming back from 2-0 down at Anfield last Sunday, although Arsenal were aided by the lack of focus from the Liverpool players after Trent Alexander-Arnold's introduction in the second half. The point earned has moved Arsenal to the brink of securing another campaign in the Champions League, but Mikel Arteta is also keen for his team to finish 2nd in the Premier League table.

Both goals could be achieved this weekend when Arsenal host their last Premier League home fixture of the season and the team are 2 points clear of Newcastle United in 3rd place and who are the opponent this Sunday. The Gunners have a 10-6-2 record at the Emirates Stadium in the top flight and have scored 34 goals and conceded 17 in those matches.

Arsenal have not won any of their last 5 games in all competitions, but they did avoid a fourth loss in a row when earning the 2-2 draw at Liverpool. Surprisingly the side have failed to win any of their last 4 home games in all competitions since Arsenal beat Real Madrid in the Champions League Quarter Final First Leg. Arsenal have lost consecutive home games against Paris Saint-Germain and Bournemouth.

Mikel Merino is suspended and both Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard will need late fitness tests to determine availability.

Newcastle United

They scored very early and had their opponent reduced to ten men in the middle of the first half, but Newcastle United were hanging onto a 1-0 lead over Chelsea deep into the second half. Ultimately they did score another goal and the three points earned makes Newcastle United a strong contender to play in the Champions League for a second time in three seasons.

They moved up into 3rd place in the Premier League table thanks to the win over Chelsea, but there are only 4 points between The Magpies and 7th placed Nottingham Forest. The table could look considerably different by the time this game kicks off at the Emirates Stadium with the teams in 5th, 6th and 7th all completing fixtures before Newcastle United play in North London. The side have an 8-4-6 away record in the Premier League this season.

Newcastle United have lost 1 of their last 11 games in all competitions in regular time and 8 wins in 10 fixtures has given Eddie Howe's team all of the momentum they need. They had won consecutive away Premier League games at West Ham United and Leicester City, but Newcastle United have since been thumped 4-1 at Villa Park and shared the points at Brighton.

Sven Botman should be available for selection, but the likes of Kieran Trippier, Joe Willock and Joelinton are doubtful.

Head to Head

Newcastle United have not only beaten Arsenal in all 3 games played between the clubs this season, but they have yet to concede a goal.

The game at the Emirates Stadium was played in the League Cup Semi Final First Leg and Newcastle United secured a 0-2 win here.

Arsenal had been unbeaten in 13 home games against Newcastle United and had won 12 of those matches before that loss in the League Cup in January.

Prediction

The number crunchers may make both Arsenal and Newcastle United strong favourites to earn Champions League places, but the pressure could be on both teams if the likes of Chelsea, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have won before this fixture is played.

Out of the two teams, Arsenal remain in a stronger position and they have home advantage as Mikel Arteta's team look to finish with a flourish.

Recent performances have not been too bad, but the results have not been there for Arsenal and they could be without some key figures for this last home game of the season. Even playing at home has not turned things around and Arsenal have lost consecutive fixtures here, while failing to win any of their last 4, but having a full week to prepare should help.

They are facing a Newcastle United team that earned an important 2-0 win over Chelsea last Sunday, but Eddie Howe will know his team were far from at their best. Like the hosts, Newcastle United are without some key players and that has perhaps left them feeling a little more vulnerable all around.

Strong results against Arsenal this season will give Newcastle United plenty of confidence and they do have attacking players that can hurt the hosts.

However, it may prove to be plenty challenging to contain Arsenal too and this could be a pretty entertaining fixture with both teams looking to get forward and score the goals needed to secure the three points on offer.

The edge may be with Arsenal considering some of the vulnerabilities displayed by Newcastle United in their last couple of away Premier League fixtures. The lack of striking power has been an issue for The Gunners, and they are without Mikel Merino, but there is enough quality for Arsenal to end their winless run against an opponent that looked nervy against ten man Chelsea last Sunday.

Both teams should secure Champions League Football when the season is concluded, but this may be the week when Arsenal guarantee 2nd spot in the Division and leave Newcastle United waiting to cement their top five spot.
