If they had held onto a 0-1 lead at Dundee United this past weekend, Aberdeen would have guaranteed themselves a spot in the Europa League Qualifiers for July. However, the eventual defeat means The Dons will now only join the second European competition if they win the Scottish FA Cup on Saturday, while a defeat would push Aberdeen into the Conference League.

The glory days under Alex Ferguson have become a distant memory for Aberdeen fans- they won ten major trophies under Ferguson's guidance before he departed for Manchester United and Aberdeen have won just four trophies since then. The last of those was the League Cup in 2014 and Aberdeen have not won the Scottish FA Cup since 1990. The Dons have beaten Elgin City, Dunfermline Athletic, Queen's Park and Hearts in their run to the FA Cup Final.

Aberdeen had a miserable end to the Scottish Premiership season with 4 straight defeats and conceding nine goals to the two Glasgow giants in that time. Prior to this slump. Aberdeen had been unbeaten in 8 games in all competitions.

Celtic

Many in and around Scotland are hoping for a stronger Rangers so that the competition ramps up, but Celtic fans could not care less with their club dominating all domestic matters. Brendan Rodgers could be set to secure a second domestic Treble in three years and Celtic would then have achieved this in six of the last nine seasons.

There was very little challenge to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership and even the 1-1 draw with St Mirren this past weekend would not have dampened the festive mood around the club. It means another shot at the Champions League, although Celtic will have to win one Qualifier to rejoin the League Phase of that competition in August. For now the attention is on winning the Scottish FA Cup having beaten Kilmarnock, Raith Rovers, Hibernian and St Johnstone to take their place at Hampden Park.

Celtic are unbeaten in 7 games in all competitions and have won 5 of those fixtures, while the late goal to earn the 1-1 draw with St Mirren will keep some of the momentum behind the team. The Bhoys are not only unbeaten in 14 Scottish Cup ties, but only once have they been pushed to Extra Time and/or Penalties in that run.

Head to Head

Celtic and Aberdeen are meeting for a sixth time this season.

The first ended 2-2 at Celtic Park, but the next four have all been won by the Champions.

Worryingly for Aberdeen, 3 of those 4 wins has seen Celtic score at least five goals against them, including a 6-0 thumping right here at Hampden Park in the Scottish League Cup Semi Final.

Aberdeen fans might instead think back to the Scottish FA Cup Semi Final played between the clubs last season which ended 3-3 after Extra Time before Celtic won the Penalty Shoot Out.

Prediction

Cup Finals can be a time when the form book can be thrown out of the window, but it is still very difficult to see how Aberdeen can be much more competitive against Celtic.

Since the first match, Celtic have scored 17 goals in four wins against Aberdeen, including a 1-5 victory at Pittodrie earlier this month.

The Dons have had some unhappy fans, which led to some very disappointing images and outcomes this past weekend, and the players may be struggling for the confidence that will be needed to prevent Celtic from winning yet another domestic Treble.

If the favourites come out with the right attitude, it is hard to know how Celtic can fail to win the Final and they should have too much for Aberdeen if the underdog is forced to chase at any point within the game.

Celtic have been in strong form down the stretch and continue to score a lot of goals at this level and they may make things relatively comfortable at the end of the 90 minutes on Saturday.
