Romania
After reaching the Second Round at Euro 2024 last summer and then winning all five Nations League games (that were completed) to earn Promotion to League B in that competition, Romania would have entered the World Cup Qualifiers with real ambitions to returning to the Finals for the first time since 1998. In each of the World Cup Finals in 1990, 1994 and 1998, Romania made the Knock Out Rounds and they were Quarter Finalists thirty-one years ago.
Unfortunately the World Cup Qualifying campaign could not have begun any worse for Romania who are already under significant pressure within the section. Losses to both Bosnia-Herzegovina and, most recently, Austria means there is work to do and Romania can ill-afford to drop any points on Match Day 4 as they look to get a little closer to the leaders and at least challenge for a top two finish.
Romania failed to win any of their last 3 Euro 2024 games, but did manage to bounce back in the Nations League with a host of goals scored. They have beaten San Marino in between those losses to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Austria in this section, and had been unbeaten in 8 home competitive fixtures prior to the defeat to Bosnia.
Cyprus
There have been times when Cyprus have been awkward within Qualifying Groups, but that was far from the case in the last European Qualifiers. They have since finished a distant third in their last Nations League Group in League C and have been beaten at Bosnia-Herzegovina in this World Cup Qualifying Group.
A home win over San Marino means Cyprus have already surpassed the points tally from the last Qualifying campaign when they were in a tough section and beaten in all 8 games played. The battling display at Bosnia-Herzegovina on Match Day 2 will have given Cyprus some confidence and they are one of three teams in this section that have 3 points on the board and trail the leaders, Bosnia, by 6 points.
Cyprus earned 2 wins in their Nations League Group and both against Lithuania, but they were well beaten in the other 4 games. The side did earn a 2-2 draw at Bulgaria in an international friendly last week as they prepared for this World Cup Qualifier and that means only 2 defeats in the last 5 games played.
Head to Head
Romania and Cyprus were in the same Nations League Group back in the Autumn in Europe and the former won both matches by three goal margins.
The game hosted by Romania ended 4-1 in their favour and they have won all 7 home games played against this opponent.
Prediction
There is plenty of pressure on Romania after the narrow defeat to Austria on Match Day 3 and even finishing in the top two of this World Cup Qualifying campaign will be tough.
They will be comfortable with the match up on Match Day 4 having crushed Cyprus both home and away in the Nations League earlier this season. Romania were also big winners in San Marino and they can make sure they are back within 3 points of Bosnia-Herzegovina with a victory.
Cyprus can pose problems and they were only 2-1 behind in Bucharest going into the final ten minutes of that fixture.
However, they still conceded seven goals in two games against Romania and the home team can produce a relatively straight-forward win in this one.
