Denmark
Being involved in the Nations League Quarter Finals meant Denmark were not going to be playing in the opening World Cup Qualifiers in March. The draw has pitted them in a Group containing four nations so all of the World Cup Qualifiers will be played later this year and that means Denmark are just playing a couple of friendlies this month.
Some of the players will have some regret at the way they were beaten by Portugal in the Nations League Quarter Finals, especially with the Portuguese going on to win the trophy this past weekend. The Danes had beaten Portugal at home, but were eventually overwhelmed in Extra Time in the Second Leg, but they will go into this World Cup Qualifying Group as top Seed and favourites.
Denmark came from behind to beat Northern Ireland in a friendly at the end of last week and this is a nation looking to take part in the World Cup Finals for a third tournament in a row. After that win last time out, Denmark have won 7 of their last 8 home games with the sole exception being a defeat to Spain in the Nations League Group.
Lithuania
Relegation from League C of the Nations League came without securing a single point, but Lithuania have already bettered that in their World Cup Qualifying Group. They were able to secure a point in an away Qualifier in Malta on Match Day 3, but the biggest ambition for the nation remains finishing in 4th place in the five team section.
Some credit has to be given to Lithuania for picking up 2 points from the three World Cup Qualifiers played, including from a 2-2 draw with Finland. Only a late goal saw Poland get the better of them on Match Day 1, and Lithuania may feel they can potentially surpass the 6 points they earned in their last Euro Qualifying Group.
Lithuania's defeat to Poland made it 7 straight competitive losses for the team, but draws with Finland and Malta will at least have restored some of the confidence. In the last Qualifying Group, Lithuania were beaten in away games at Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro without scoring and that can have the Poland defeat added to that trend.
Head to Head
These nations met in the 1994 World Cup Qualifiers and those two matches are the only previous matches between Lithuania and Denmark.
The then European Champions took four points from the two matches with the majority earned from a 4-0 home win.
Prediction
International friendlies are increasingly rare on the fully loaded football calendar, but Denmark's World Cup Qualifying campaign will not start until later in the year.
They maintained a strong run of form at home by coming from behind to beat Northern Ireland last time out and Denmark should be relatively comfortable winners in this one.
Changes can break the rhythm of the match, but they should have too much for a Lithuania team that had a tough Qualifier in Malta just a few days ago. The point earned will have given Lithuania the momentum to avoid finishing bottom of that Group, but they were well beaten in the Nations League earlier this season and have also suffered routine away Qualifier defeats against nations comparable to Denmark.
Keep stakes to a minimum for any friendly game where motivation is perhaps not as high as it could be, and especially this one at the end of a long season.
