Preview
Two years ago, Portugal U21 were stunned in their opening Group match at the hands of co-hosts Georgia U21 and that meant having to battle to earn a place in the Quarter Final. Credit has to be given to that squad for managing to do that and they have made a stronger start to the 2025 Finals by avoiding a defeat.
This time the match was against one of the favourites to win the open tournament and Portugal will feel it is a point gained against France U21.
There may be some regret considering the stronger chances created in the goalless draw, but Portugal have something to build upon and they will be looking for more in the second Group fixture. Plenty back home would also want to have some momentum before heading into the final Group game and the chance to exact some revenge over Georgia for that stunning defeat in June 2023.
Of course the main priority is to make the Quarter Final and a win on Saturday would go a long way to achieving that as far as Portugal are concerned.
They will have to be wary of Poland U21 who are looking to bounce back from a 1-2 defeat to Georgia to open this Group and knowing another defeat will end their participation in Slovakia this June. Poland will feel they had the better of the chances against Georgia in the opening fixture, but losing to what many will feel is the weakest team in the section has already put the Poles in an unenviable position.
Losing late to Georgia does mean Poland have won 1 of their last 5 games at this level, but respect has to be given to a team that have drawn 3-3 with Germany U21 and Denmark U21 during that run. Both of those teams impressed in the opening round robin of Group fixtures so Poland are a team capable of more, although the pressure is on following the defeat in this section.
Portugal have also been struggling to turn performances into wins and they were beaten the last time they played Poland at this level.
However, it does feel like the momentum is with Portugal to bounce back and they will believe a similar performance to the opener will be good enough to secure a vital three points.
Prediction
Unsurprisingly the layers are taking no chances when pricing up the chance of seeing at least three goals in this match, but both teams may feel they can play a part in the action.
Portugal impressed a bit more than Poland in the opening fixtures and that after taking on a tougher assignment and the feeling is that the former can back that up.
Respect has to be given to Poland for some of the recent results they have produced before the disappointing defeat to Georgia, but the game situation may work against them.
With Poland needing any positive result to stay alive, Portugal could potentially catch them out late on and that could see the favourite put a gloss on the final scoreline.
