Newly promoted Birmingham City return to Championship action in Friday night’s season-opener against Ipswich Town at St Andrews keen to continue the momentum which saw the west midlands club stroll to the League One title last term.

Indeed, Chris Davies’s side won the third tier title by a significant 19-point margin over runners-up Wrexham and The Blues will start their Championship campaign with home advantage.

Having won their last five league matches towards the end of last season, Birmingham City picked up a few important wins in pre-season as well, which included a 3-1 win at Sevilla and culminated in a 1-0 home win against Nottingham Forest.

The Blues are unbeaten in their last 11 home games at St Andrews in all competitions, picking up no fewer than 10 wins in the process.

While Birmingham City were homing in on automatic promotion, Ipswich Town were struggling towards the foot of the Premier League for much of last season’s top flight campaign and ultimately the battle became too much for the Tractor Boys who dropped through the trap-door to the Championship.

Ipswich Town finished second from bottom in the table but still 10 points above Southampton who endured an atrocious campaign in the Premier League, only just avoiding the worst league record set by Derby County!

Nevertheless, Kieran McKenna’s side enjoyed a promising pre-season as the visitors racked up wins in each of their four warm-up games which consisted of victories gained over BW Linz, Aberdeen, Charlton Athletic and Auxerre respectively.

However, Ipswich Town have found St Andrews a tough place to go and get a result in recent exchanges.
