Preview

A fully deserved lead from the First Leg has put Midtjylland in command of this Third Qualifying Round tie and an experienced outfit can ensure they move through to the Play Off Round in the Europa League. That would also guarantee Midtjylland Group Stage Football in either this competition or the Conference League and avoid what looks to be a significant test for the losing team.

Dropping out of the Europa League would be a blow for whichever team has to suffer that fate, but the draw for the Conference League Play Off Round means a tie against one of the favourites to win that competition.

It is Crystal Palace who will play the losing team after having their appeal for being unable to play in the Europa League fail earlier in the week.

The reality is that it is a big ask for Fredrikstad to avoid being the opponent for the English Premier League club having lost 1-3 at home and looking like second best in the First Leg. They have not been playing with much consistency domestically having earned a place in European competition for the first time in sixteen years and Fredrikstad will do well to earn a return for next season.

Fredrikstad did have the weekend off from domestic action so they could prepare as well as possible for the Second Leg, which is more than can be said for Midtjylland, but 2 wins in 13 in all competitions is not exactly positive form. The side have failed to win any of their last 6 away games in all competitions, although Fredrikstad have only lost twice in normal time in that run.

Unfortunately for the Norwegian club, a draw is no good for them here and having to push forward could play into Midtjylland's hands, especially with the amount of goals being scored. They were held to a 3-3 draw in their most recent game, having led 3-1, and that was a game in which Midtjylland rested some key players with the bid to earn a spot in the Europa League Group Stage the focus this early into the new season.

The end of last season saw Midtjylland pile up the victories, but they have drawn 3 of the last 4 at home in all competitions. However, they have scored at least three goals in 3 of those matches too and the firepower is expected to give the home team the edge and even more so if Fredrikstad feel they have to chase the game.

Midtjylland did lose a fixture against Fredrikstad in the Atlantic Cup in February 2024, but that is largely seen as a friendly competition and this is a much more serious matter.

Prediction

The underlying numbers suggested Midtjylland were deserving winners in the First Leg and they can back that up by beating Fredrikstad again.

The home team have been struggling defensively, which is always a concern, but Midtjylland have been scoring a lot of goals and this makes them very dangerous.

At some point you have to believe Fredrikstad will have to take some risks and that could see them exposed to a Midtjylland team that can progress through to the Play Off Round with another solid win on the scoreboard.
