Preview
Between 1997 and 2003, the Miami Marlins (71-80) won two World Series, but they have made the post-season twice since the last of those successes. Neither appearance saw the Marlins have a deep run and they are simply prolonging elimination right now as thoughts behind the scenes have perhaps already turned to the 2026 season.
Winners of five of the last six games, including the opener of this series, has just kept the Miami Marlins alive in the National League Wild Card Race, although it is a matter of time before they are officially eliminated. The positive is seeing what some of the players on the roster can do and how they can put that together for next season, while others will be hoping to prove they can be the part of a speedy transition back into a potential contender.
The Marlins continue this series with the lowly Colorado Rockies (41-110) who can at least say they are not going to finish with a worse record than the 2024 Chicago White Sox. However, the Rockies, who continue to still pile up the losses, need another win to move past the White Sox's miserable record from last season.
They will hand the ball to McCade Brown, a rookie who has a 0-4 record and 9.88 ERA in four starts made for Colorado this season.
It is always going to be a tough learning curve while a member of a historically bad team, but Brown can at least say that his most recent start was the best in his young Major League career. He only allowed two runs while recording one out in the 5th Inning against the San Diego Padres, but took the hard luck decision loss after getting no support from the batting lineup.
Three of the four starts made by McCade Brown have been against teams that will be likely be playing in the Playoffs and that has to be considered when preparing for his first appearance against the Marlins.
Miami will turn to Ryan Weathers who is more experienced in the Major League, but who has yet to cement down a permanent role at this level. The pitcher has a 2-1 record with a 2.73 ERA in six starts for the Marlins in 2025, while he showed some positive signs in sixteen starts in 2024 and so Ryan Weathers will have an opportunity to open next season as part of the rotation.
He had not started for the Marlins since early July before being handed the ball last week and Ryan Weathers held the Washington Nationals scoreless through 5 completed Innings and earned the decision win.
Ryan Weathers will be starting against the Colorado Rockies for the first time since 2023 when he allowed a single run in 3 completed Innings as a member of the San Diego Padres.
The Rockies swept a three game series in Miami in June, but have lost three of the last four home games against the Marlins, including the Tuesday opener.
Prediction
Neither of these teams are going to be playing beyond the regular season, but the Miami Marlins continue to try hard and they can win this game.
Ryan Weathers has produced some solid stuff as a starter in 2025, while McCade Brown is still getting to grips with the Major League in his rookie season.
The last was the best of four starts made by Brown, but Colorado are having issues at the plate and that should mean the Marlines are capable of finding a way to win for a sixth time in seven games.
