A Sports Betting Preview by Auls
Football: English Premier League
Saturday 20th September 2025 - Kick Off 3pm
West Ham United
The pressure has never really dropped around Graham Potter, even after the 0-3 win at Nottingham Forest prior to the September international break. The manager would have been hoping that result would at least given his West Ham United players some momentum, but the fans voiced their unhappiness after the 0-3 home defeat to rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
It all means West Ham United are in 18th place in the Premier League table with 3 points on the board, while the 11 goals conceded is the highest in the Division. The opening results at the London Stadium have been really disappointing and West Ham United have a 0-0-2 record here with a single goal scored and 8 conceded.
West Ham United did end the last campaign with some decent results behind them, but they have lost 4 of the opening 5 games played in all competitions this season. The form at home has been poor for a number of months now and West Ham United have not won any of their last 7 Premier League games at the London Stadium, while losing 3 in a row here.
Tomas Soucek was sent off in the home loss to Spurs and will serve a three game suspension meaning he will not be available until after the October international break.
Crystal Palace
Oliver Glasner has taken Cup competitions seriously in his big managerial roles and that is the situation with Crystal Palace having already led them to the surprise FA Cup win in May. He picked a far stronger starting eleven in the League Cup Third Round than was expected, but Crystal Palace have yet to click into top gear and needed Penalties to beat Millwall from the second tier.
That result followed more dropped points in the Premier League and Crystal Palace are 9th in the table with 6 points secured. The Eagles are one of three unbeaten teams left in the top flight, while they will head to East London in this derby with a 1-1-0 record away from home having scored 3 goals and kept 2 clean sheets.
Crystal Palace have continued to extend a long unbeaten run, but it should be noted that of the 8 matches played this season, 6 have now ended in draws in normal time. They have enjoyed Penalty Shoot Out successes against Liverpool in the Community Shield and Millwall in the League Cup, but Oliver Glasner will want his team to find some form in the final third. Crystal Palace did win 0-3 at Aston Villa in the last away game played, but had played out consecutive away goalless draws prior to that.
Ismaila Sarr's absence continues to be felt and Crystal Palace have scored a single goal without him in the starting lineup over the last week. He is hoping to be back next weekend, but is expected to miss out again, as is Adam Wharton. Marc Guehi was withdrawn after 60 minutes on Tuesday, but the feeling is that it was a planned substitution.
Head to Head
Both Premier League games featuring these London rivals finished in 0-2 wins for the away team last season.
West Ham United have not won any of their last 6 home games against Crystal Palace and half of those have ended in defeat.
Prediction
There is no doubting that Crystal Palace are playing with more authority than some of the recent draws may suggest and it is wastefulness in the final third that is letting them down.
Losing Eberechi Eze late in the transfer window is a clear blow, but also having Ismaila Sarr sitting out has held Crystal Palace back. New players will take a bit of time settling in, although Oliver Glasner will certainly feel his team have created enough quality in the final third to expect things to change sooner than later.
Defensively he has found the exact right balance and Crystal Palace are continuing to restrict opportunities being created against them.
No team will expect to completely shut down the likes of Chelsea and Aston Villa when visiting, but Crystal Palace have limited the threats and clean sheets at both Stamford Bridge and Villa Park has to be respected.
Now they visit a West Ham United team who have scored a single home goal, but who have capitulated in front of their own fans against London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Eight goals have been conceded in those matches hosted and the fans are on the brink of revolution, which is mainly targeted at the owners rather than Graham Potter.
However, as most managers will state, when something like that happens, the board will end up changing things in this department.
And with that in mind, Graham Potter is under significant pressure to find the solutions to get West Ham United moving up the standings with some consistency. Ironically it is Nuno Espirito Santo who has been most linked with any potential vacancy, the one manager that Graham Potter has gotten the better of this season, but The Hammers need to show a lot more resolve than they have over the last month.
Losing games is one thing, but West Ham United have given up some big chances in the home defeats without offering the same kind of threat the other way.
A poor recent home record against Crystal Palace cannot be easily dismissed either and The Eagles look worth backing on any 'Draw No Bet' market.
It is difficult to back Crystal Palace to win outright seeing as how the draws have been piling up and still being without Ismaila Sarr.
However, they should have the better of the chances in this contest and even slightly better composure from the players on the pitch could earn Crystal Palace back to back away Premier League victories.
