There will have been a lot of confidence in the New York Yankees (90-68) dugout that they could close and then overtake the American League East leaders Toronto Blue Jays in the final week of the regular season. The winner of the Division is going to earn a Bye through to the Divisional Round of the Playoffs, while also being in line to finish with the Number 1 Seed in the American League, while the other is going to join the Wild Card Series that begins early next week.

With four games left, the New York Yankees have erased the 2 game gap between themselves and the Toronto Blue Jays that was there at the beginning of the week.

Aaron Judge made the headlines as the Yankees batting lineup backed up the strong starting pitching and they were comfortable winners over the Chicago White Sox (58-100) who have lost at least triple digit regular season games for a second year in a row.

Fans will be keeping one eye on events in Toronto, but the Yankees will feel that they still need to focus and win out having lost the tie-breaker with the Blue Jays and so needing to outperform them over the last four game.

Carlos Rodon will be given the ball for the Yankees and the pitcher has a 17-9 record and 3.04 ERA in thirty-two starts, while also being tabbed to begin the second post-season game for New York no matter when that is. Recent form has been impressive and Rodon has overcome what was a really poor first season in The Bronx by putting together back to back solid years.

He has been showing that there is considerable gas left in the tank and Carlos Rodon has been operating with a 2.30 ERA in his last nine starts for the Yankees. Six of those have ended in decision wins and Rodon has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of those starts to give his team every chance to win games.

Last month, Carlos Rodon threw 6 Innings against the Chicago White Sox and restricted them to a single run as he picked up the decision win. In two career starts against the White Sox, Rodon is now 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA and the Yankees have to believe the starter can lay a solid foundation again.

The White Sox have dropped ten of their last eleven games and they have lost five of the six games played against the Yankees in 2025.

They will hand the ball to Davis Martin who has a 7-10 record and 4.03 ERA in twenty-five appearances in 2025 and all but one of those has been in starts. This is another personal improvement in terms of the numbers for a pitcher in just his third season in the Major League and Martin has made more starts in 2025 than his previous two years combined.

In the last eight starts, Davis Martin has a 3.86 ERA, while also producing a 4-1 record, and he has managed to complete 5 Innings in seven of those outings.

However, the shortest start in that run came against the New York Yankees who tagged Davis Martin for three earned runs and forced him out of the game before the end of the Fourth Inning. That was just the second start made against New York and significantly tougher than the first in 2024.

Prediction

With the Toronto Blue Jays struggling, the New York Yankees will be keen to keep the momentum and to maintain pressure on the American League East leaders.

Both conclude the season with series against eliminated Divisional rivals, but it feels the schedule is tougher for the Blue Jays, especially on Thursday evening.

New York have to concentrate on themselves and Manager Aaron Boone will be urging this team to win out and have every shot of overtaking Toronto and securing the top Seed in the American League.

Carlos Rodon should give them the platform to complete the sweep of this series, even if Davis Martin has been pitching with some consistency for the struggling White Sox.
