Tottenham Hotspur

Thomas Frank stated that he will be taking all competitions seriously this season as Tottenham Hotspur manager and his team selection was clearly going to be strong enough to progress past Doncaster Rovers in the League Cup Third Round. A late goal put a final gloss on the scoreline, but the draw for the next Round is very tough, and Tottenham Hotspur will want to maintain momentum before the fixture at St James' Park at the end of October.

The last week before the next international break will be focusing on Premier League and Champions League commitments and Tottenham Hotspur are 3rd in the domestic standings and 5 points behind leaders Liverpool. The side have a 1-0-1 record at home in the Premier League where Spurs have scored 3 goals and conceded 1.

Tottenham Hotspur were upset in a home defeat to Bournemouth last month, but they are unbeaten in 4 games in all competitions since then and have won 3 of those matches. The squad showed plenty of character to fight back from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 draw at Brighton last weekend, while Tottenham Hotspur hung onto an early goal in the 1-0 win over Villarreal in the last home game played.

Kota Tokai, Ben Davies, Randal Kolo Muani and Dominic Solanke are all in training and could take part on Saturday. Pape Sarr was surprisingly left out on Wednesday evening with a knock, but the manager believes he will be ready to take his place within the squad.

Wolves

Wins over Premier League opponents in West Ham United and Everton have taken Wolves through to the League Cup Fourth Round and Vitor Pereira is now expecting his team to start putting some positive form together in the top flight. It has been a very difficult opening to the season for the team, especially when it comes to Premier League Football, but the manager has made it clear that the squad cannot use up any more excuses beginning this weekend.

They are not only bottom of the Premier League table, but Wolves are the only team without a point having failed to build on taking the lead last weekend in an eventual 1-3 home loss to Leeds United. The side have a 0-0-2 away record in the Premier League having lost both fixtures by the same 1-0 scoreline.

Wolves came from behind to beat West Ham United 3-2 in the League Cup Second Round last month, but did not build on that result and lost 3 Premier League games in a row following the victory. During the week they beat Everton in the League Cup, but it is Premier League points that Vitor Pereira and the supporters want and Wolves are looking to avoid a fifth away Premier League defeat in a row.

Andre is a doubt for Wolves, but an otherwise strong squad should be travelling down to North London for this evening kick off.

Head to Head

Wolves took four points from Tottenham Hotspur last season.

They scored very late on in the 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves have only lost 1 of their last 4 visits here, while producing wins in half of those matches.

Prediction

Results are always going to catch the eye more than anything else in the sporting world and football is no different.

Under Thomas Frank, Tottenham Hotspur have been putting plenty of positive results on the board, although the underlying numbers suggest that there are still improvements to be made. Beating Doncaster Rovers from League One is one matter, but Spurs were fortunate to beat Villarreal in the Champions League and had to come from 2-0 down to earn a draw with Brighton last weekend.

The defensive numbers have looked better and it is clearly an area that Thomas Frank would have targeted for improvement after the season Tottenham Hotspur had under Ange Postecoglou.

However, Frank has also made it clear that he expects a stronger balance between defence and attack and he is well aware that there is still work for Tottenham Hotspur to do in the final third.

This weekend they are hosting a Wolves team that have been struggling at the back, but who have also progressed through to the League Cup Fourth Round. A home win over Everton has been welcomed and Vitor Pereira has made it well known that he expects his team to now kick on in the Premier League after another poor start to the campaign.

Wolves have lacked some confidence and they have struggled to create chances away from home at Bournemouth and Newcastle United. At the same time, both hosts did get into very promising positions and this feels like a Premier League game that can be edged by Tottenham Hotspur over the course of the ninety minutes.

Spurs did beat Burnley comfortably here, but have scored eleven goals in the next 6 games and three of those were scored against Doncaster Rovers. The last two home games have ended 0-1 and 1-0 and Tottenham Hotspur may have just enough quality in the final third to find a way to edge past a Wolves team that have lost 1-0 in both away Premier League games played this season.

Backing Tottenham Hotspur to win a game featuring fewer than four goals combined is odds against, but it may be better off taking an extra goal on the total line and having a price matching Spurs to cover the one goal Asian Handicap.

A narrow win is perhaps most likely though and so the approach taken to this Pick backs that feeling up.
