Preview

Two games remain in the regular season and both the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees (92-68) 'held serve' on Friday night behind strong home wins. There were moments of concern, but the batting lineups came up trumps and both teams move into big Saturday games.

Of course there is more pressure on the New York Yankees having lost the tie-breaker with the Blue Jays at the top of the American League East.

One defeat will likely be costly, while Toronto control their own destiny knowing two more wins and there is nothing the Yankees can do about overtaking them. The pain for the team finishing second in the Division is that they will likely have the second best record in the American League, but would only be good enough for a top Wild Card spot and likely having to win two road Series next month in order to make the World Series.

And that is assuming they will win the opening Wild Card Series which is going to almost certainly be against the Boston Red Sox.

As has been the case for the last couple of weeks, the New York Yankees are only focusing on what they can control and that is trying to win games and keep the pressure on those around them.

Rookie Cam Schlittler is scheduled for his latest start having compiled a 3-3 record with a 3.27 ERA in thirteen starts this season and he will be pitching with some confidence. In his last outing, Schlittler pitched into the Sixth Inning and allowed a single run against the Baltimore Orioles (75-85) as the youngster prepares to face them again.

Inconsistent performances in September are something that will be monitored with Cam Schlittler allowing at least four runs in two of the four starts made this month. However, the other two have ended with just a single earned run allowed, but this is the end of the regular season and games really matter so Manager Aaron Boone will be ready to spring the bullpen open if needed.

The Yankees beat the Orioles 8-4 on Friday night and they have beaten this Divisional rival in six of the last seven games.

Baltimore will turn to Tomoyuki Sugano who has a 10-9 record and a 4.54 ERA in twenty-nine starts this season. The 35 year old rookie as far as the Major League goes has perhaps seen the long regular season take a toll on him and recent performances have been a struggle.

Tomoyuki Sugano has a 0-4 record in his last four starts for the Orioles and he has an 8.02 ERA in those outings.

That includes allowing four runs in 3 Innings thrown against the New York Yankees in his last start and Sugano has had problems facing this Divisional opponent in each previous start. The first time he faced the Yankees, Sugano held them scoreless through 5 Innings, but he did not get out of the Fourth Inning when allowing three earned runs in June before the most recent start, which is the shortest Sugano has had against the Yankees and with the most earned runs allowed.

Prediction

Both players are rookies in the Major League even if Cam Schlittler is eleven years younger than Tomoyuki Sugano and so there has been some inconsistencies in their performances on the mound.

The latter looks a little worn down though and Schlittler is coming into this game having just contained this Baltimore batting lineup.

The Orioles should be better having seen what the Yankees rookie offers, but the New York batting lineup are playing with real confidence and they can rough up Sugano early enough to set the team up for another win by at least two runs.
