Newcastle United

Not for the first time this season, Newcastle United conceded a late goal in front of the home supporters to suffer a heartbreaking Premier League loss against one of the leading contenders to win the title. Eddie Howe has to be pleased with the reaction after this team thumped Union Saint-Gilloise 0-4 in Belgium in the Champions League on Wednesday and he will now look for The Magpies to really get the Premier League campaign ramped up.

They were leading Arsenal for a long time, but an 84th minute equaliser was followed by another away goal in injury time and leaves Newcastle United in 15th place in the Premier League table and with 6 points on the board. It also dropped Newcastle United's home record to 1-0-2 in the top flight where they have scored 4 goals, but conceded 5.

Outside of a win over League One opponents in the League Cup, Newcastle United had been on a difficult run and that makes the win in the Champions League feel very important. The players have not lost confidence, but they have lost to Liverpool, Barcelona and Arsenal in games at St James' Park this season and only narrowly beat Wolves.

Jacob Ramsey and Yoane Wissa should be available when the next international break is concluded, but Tino Livramento will perhaps be absent until after the November international break at the earliest.

Nottingham Forest

'You're Getting Sacked in the Morning'- these are chants that you might have expected to be coming out of the away end, but it was the Nottingham Forest home fans making their feelings clear to new manager Ange Postecoglou. Further songs for former manager Nuno Espirito Santo and some angry words directed at the owner can only have increased the pressure on Postecoglou who has overseen a terrible start to his tenure at the City Ground.

Some of the defending produced has been calamitous and Nottingham Forest have sunk to 17th in the Premier League table with just 5 points on the board, while also having a single point from two Europa League ties played. Playing away from the City Ground might be a positive in some way for the team and the manager, although Nottingham Forest have a 0-2-1 away record in the Premier League this season.

Ange Postecoglou might have helped Tottenham Hotspur win the Europa League, but it was a poor overall campaign and he has become the first Nottingham Forest in a CENTURY to fail to win any of the opening 6 matches in charge. Consecutive defeats at the City Ground have already created a pressure around the manager, while Nottingham Forest had lost away games at Arsenal and Swansea City. However, The Tricky Trees have recorded consecutive away draws in all competitions at Burnley and Real Betis.

Murillo had to go off early in the home loss to Midtjylland on Thursday and is almost certainly going to be missing along with Douglas Luiz and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Head to Head

Newcastle United did the Premier League double over Nottingham Forest last season, which included a 4-3 win here at St James' Park.

The Magpies have won 8 of their last 9 home League fixtures against Nottingham Forest, although the exception was on Boxing Day 2023 when a Chris Wood hat-trick helped the visitors to a 1-3 win.

Prediction

Two contrasting evenings in European Football will be put aside as Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest look to push up the Premier League standings.

The home team are 15th in the Premier League, while the away team are 17th, and there feels like a lot more momentum behind Newcastle United heading into this weekend.

Eddie Howe remains beloved by the home supporters and his team will have some rhythm and chemistry building up after the big win at Union Saint-Gilloise.

They have been far from their best for the majority of the season, but Newcastle United pose a threat from set pieces and have pace in forward positions that can hurt the very best teams.

Right now, Nottingham Forest are more likely to be involved in a relegation scrap than a Champions League fight after a miserable start to life under Ange Postecoglou.

Where the home manager has plenty of respect from the supporters and will also have the patience to get through stickier moments, Ange Postecoglou is 6 games into his Nottingham Forest tenure and already being mocked by his own supporters. The goals being conceded are absolutely alarming and everything that was good under previous manager Nuno Espirito Santo has been poor under Postecoglou.

The defending has been so below par it has to be a big worry for the owner and the manager needs a big result if he is going to have the time to turn things around. An owner that has little patience for a project is not going to be afraid to change things if he feels they are not working out and this Nottingham Forest team look to be lacking in some confidence.

Containing Newcastle United will be tough, although the away team will cause some problems of their own.

However, that could depend on the team selection after Ange Postecoglou made a number of surprising changes to the starting eleven for the home defeat to Sunderland last Saturday. The assumption is he will not take risks again, but Nottingham Forest have some key players missing and the squad have looked a little uncertain with what they are being asked to do.

A stronger Nottingham Forest conceded 7 goals in the Premier League double-header against Newcastle United last season and this is a fixture that feels like it will be ultimately end in favour of another home win.

Newcastle United's four goals scored in Belgium on Wednesday could be another spark for the team and they should be able to manage at least two strikes in a winning effort this weekend.
