Sunderland v Wolves
Football: English Premier League
Saturday 18th October 2025 - Kick Off 3pm

Sunderland

Seven games have been played in the Premier League and there are a couple of clubs that have stood out for the early performances produced. However, some may feel that Regis Le Bris should have been given an early award for Manager of the Month after the successes he has helped Sunderland achieve after ending their long wait to return to the top flight.

They were odds on favourites to be immediately Relegated back into the Championship the moment Sunderland won the Play Off Final, but the early signs are that the club have brought in the right players to keep them in the top flight. The Black Cats are 9th in the Premier League table and the 11 points secured puts them firmly on track to reach the 40 point mark that all clubs will target to keep them in this Division. Home form has been massively important with Sunderland putting together a 2-1-0 record at the Stadium of Light over the last couple of months.

Sunderland had been unbeaten in 5 games in all competitions in normal time, but that run was ended just before the October international break when they were beaten 2-0 at Old Trafford. The side have beaten both West Ham United and Brentford here this season, while all credit has to be given to the Sunderland players for fighting back in a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, despite being reduced to ten men.

Reinildo completes his suspension this weekend. Dennis Cirkin and Romain Mundle could be back in training ahead of this fixture.

Wolves

Vitor Pereira's frustrations with the first half officiating resulted in him being sent off two weeks ago and he will not be on the sidelines for what feels an important game for Wolves. His mood would not have been improved after watching his team concede a late equaliser to Brighton two weeks ago and Wolves remain the only team in the Premier League without a victory.

Progress has been made in the League Cup and Pereira was hoping that would help spark his squad, but conceding late goals in back to back Premier League fixtures has cost Wolves four points. It leaves them bottom of the table with just 2 points secured all season and Wolves will travel to the North East with a 0-1-2 away record.

Wolves fans really do like the manager, but the poor run of Premier League form has moved to 11 games without a victory. That has to be a concern, although Wolves did end a run of 4 away Premier League defeats in succession when securing a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur at the end of September.

Toti missed out with a cold a couple of weeks ago and is set for a return. Matt Doherty has been ruled out and the hope is that he can be involved before the November international break.

Head to Head

These clubs last met in the 2017/18 Championship season and it was Sunderland who took four points out of the meetings.

The majority were earned from a 3-0 home win in a campaign in which Wolves finished as second tier Champions and Sunderland finished bottom.

The Black Cats have lost 1 of their last 10 home games against Wolves- they have won 5 of the last 7 when hosting.

Prediction

You cannot really describe any fixture as being 'pivotal' in October when the season is being played through until May, but this feels an important one for both Sunderland and Wolves.

All credit has to be given to Sunderland for the start made, but it is only a start and they will certainly have circled fixtures like this one as 'winnable' when plotting how they would get close to the 40 points needed to avoid Relegation.

Outside of the upset at the City Ground, Sunderland have beaten West Ham United and Brentford at the Stadium of Light and those results will have given the group a huge amount of confidence. A lot of signings have come in during the summer transfer window, but Regis Le Bris has got them on board with his ideas and Sunderland are set as the favourite to win this game.

This weekend they are hosting an experienced Wolves team, but one that has yet to secure a first League win of the season. Late goals from Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton have been body-blows for Wolves to absorb, but they have not lost touch with those above them and the club have managed to avoid being dragged into relegation battles in the last couple of years by winning games like this one.

Last season Wolves did beat all three newly Promoted clubs away from home in the Premier League, but they are still missing Matheus Cunha and Sunderland, Burnley and Leeds United look a lot more competitive than Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town proved to be.

Wolves have yet to find that special spark in the final third without Cunha and that has been most evident in the away games played.

Now they have to face a Sunderland team who have been pretty good in the home games played this season, especially defensively.

It should mean the home team are confident in largely containing the threat that Wolves will bring, and Sunderland have also shown they have players who can provide a bit of calmness and composure in the final third. This is hugely important for any team bidding to avoid Relegation and it feels like the best approach to take in this fixture is backing the home team to win in any 'Draw No Bet' or Asian Handicap market where the stake is returned in the event of the points being shared.
