Union Berlin plays very differently from one week to another. They have no consistency, alternating between winning, losing, and drawing in their last six games.

The Berliners narrowly lost 1-0 to Werder Bremen last week, and then it took them 120 minutes to beat Arminia Bielefeld 2-1 in the midweek cup match. Again, it was a scrappy performance, so winning there was a bit lucky.

Still, Union Berlin could draw inspiration from the fact that they are unbeaten in seven home games against SC Freiburg.

SC Freiburg is not doing well in the Bundesliga. They are winless in four, drawing three straight and losing 2-0 against Bayer Leverkusen last week. They struggle in the bottom half of the table, but playing on three different fronts takes its toll.

SC Freiburg restored their confidence with their 1-3 cup win against Fortuna Düsseldorf, where they scored two early goals and never looked back.

They were not so convincing in their Bundesliga away games, where they only won once in four trips.

The Betting Verdict

This game looks to me like a possibly dull affair. First, Union Berlin struggles to score. They scored in just one of their last four Bundesliga games, and that was against the worst team in the league, Borussia Monchengladbach.

Also, both teams played intense cup games a few days ago, and their squads are not as large as those of the top teams in Germany, meaning they do not have much time to recover or mix things up.

When it comes to direct duels, Union Berlin is undefeated in five straight duels against SC Freiburg, winning three and drawing twice.

Interestingly, SC Freiburg has beaten Union Berlin just twice in their 12 Bundesliga duels, which shows that Union Berlin is their bogey team.

I wouldn’t back either side here. It looks like a tricky match, and both sides may settle for a low-key draw that will satisfy both.

Even more so, Union Berlin has a match against Bayern Munich next week, and SC Freiburg plays in the Europa League in just a few days. Perhaps taking the draw is worth a small punt.
