Fulham
One of the main frustrations that Marco Silva has had as manager of Fulham in recent years is the sense that the ambitions of the board are much lower than those he holds himself. For the board, Fulham merely being a Premier League club means a huge boost in finances, but Silva has long spoken about pushing the team onto to the European stage and beyond.
This could all come to a head this season after Fulham's latest Premier League setback dropped them down into 17th place in the standings and 3 points clear of the relegation zone. They currently hold the worst away record in the top flight, which is putting pressure on Fulham when it comes to fixtures to be played at Craven Cottage. To the credit of the players, Fulham do have a decent enough 2-1-1 record at home where they have scored 5 goals and conceded 3.
Fulham needed Penalties to progress past League One Wycombe Wanderers into the League Cup Quarter Final, and the hope for manager Marco Silva is that it is a result that can see the team turn things around in the Premier League. Since winning the League Cup Third Round tie, Fulham have lost all 4 Premier League games. However, only the 0-1 defeat to Arsenal was at Craven Cottage and Fulham had won 4 straight here in all competitions prior to that loss.
Joachim Andersen and Harry Wilson are hoping to be available, but Fulham will have some concerns about Raul Jimenez who was forced off on Tuesday. That would be a blow to a squad already likely to be without Rodrigo Muniz, while both Antonee Robinson and Emile Smith Rowe are doubts.
Wolves
Days after a home loss to a potential relegation rival saw Vitor Pereira and some of the playing staff having words with the fans in the Molineux stands, Wolves found themselves 0-3 down at half time in the League Cup Fourth Round tie against Chelsea. The supporters were not happy, but Pereira managed to light enough of a spark to see his team fight back in the second half, even if they ultimately came up short in a 3-4 defeat.
All of that fight is going to be needed from the first whistle on Saturday, even if the Wolves board are reportedly still firmly behind Vitor Pereira after the way he guided the team out of trouble last season. The side go into this big fixture this weekend bottom of the Premier League table with just 2 points on the board, and that means Wolves are already 6 points from safety. They have a 0-1-3 away record in the top flight and Wolves have scored a single goal and conceded 5 in those matches.
Wolves conceded late goals in consecutive Premier League games against Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton to draw both games, but they have followed up with 3 straight losses in all competitions. Most worrying is that the last 2 Premier League defeats have been against Promoted clubs Sunderland and Burnley. Wolves have won none of their last 6 away Premier League games and lost 5 of those.
The squad may be lacking confidence, but Wolves have a virtually full selection from which to pick the eleven to start this fixture.
Head to Head
Both Premier League games between Fulham and Wolves were won by the away team last season.
Fulham have won 1 of their last 5 home games against Wolves and were crushed 1-4 at Craven Cottage in November 2024.
Prediction
There are some vulnerable looking odds on home favourites in the Premier League this weekend.
While the belief is that Brighton and Crystal Palace may edge to victories in that spot, Fulham are perhaps a little more uncertain even if they are playing the bottom club.
Recent results have not been the best and Fulham struggled past Wycombe Wanderers in the League Cup Fourth Round on Tuesday. They needed Penalties that day, but the bigger concern is the knock picked up by Raul Jimenez and that may just leave Fulham short in the forward areas.
They have been solid enough, but Fulham are not exactly creating a lot of chances and that does offer Wolves an opportunity.
The concern in backing Wolves here is that they have looked devoid of all confidence in recent games and found a way to lose matches. That was the case last weekend in the home defeat to Burnley, while the fixture at the Stadium of Light prior to that was close and competitive. However, the superior Sunderland confidence made the difference and the pressure has really intensified on Vitor Pereira with the fans seemingly turning against him last weekend.
Wolves have a board that still believe, but Pereira needs results and he will feel his team have done enough to earn those in recent outings. The last couple of results have been massively disappointing, but Wolves had led Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton going into the final three minutes of both matches before being pegged back in draws.
The feeling is that Wolves have perhaps been harshly done by recently and this Fulham team are not exactly blowing past opponents.
Fulham did beat Brentford pretty convincingly at home, but were fortunate in the victory over Leeds United. Since those back to back wins, Fulham have been struggling for consistency in the final third and Wolves have a decent record at Craven Cottage which may offer the players some belief.
Vitor Pereira may also take encouragement from the second half fightback against Chelsea that came up short in the League Cup on Wednesday. However, it is a fightback that offers momentum and Wolves may do enough to earn a positive result in this part of West London against a Fulham team struggling for consistency going forward and who are potentially without a couple of key defenders for this fixture.
