Liverpool

Not everyone will agree with the Liverpool board, but they remain committed behind manager Arne Slot and this difficult season is set to end with Champions League Football being secured. Most would have expected so much more from Liverpool after the activity in the summer transfer window, but Slot has made it clear that the squad is transitioning and he believes the players will benefit from the experiences of this campaign.

Losing to rivals Manchester United will never sit well with Liverpool fans and the defeat at Old Trafford leaves them in 4th place in the Premier League table, although 6 points clear of Bournemouth outside of the Champions League places. Only three games remain and Liverpool will be looking to improve the 10-4-3 record at Anfield and secure that Champions League spot as soon as possible.

Liverpool had won 3 of the previous 4 games in all competitions before the 3-2 defeat at Manchester United, but they have not been the most convincing team when analysing performances. The Reds have been better at Anfield where they have won 5 of the last 7 games played in all competitions.

Alisson is hoping to return this weekend, but Mo Salah remains a doubt. An injury in the days leading up to the last fixture forced Alexander Isak to miss the trip to Old Trafford, but he could be available this weekend.

Chelsea

There are going to be some big decisions to be made at Stamford Bridge this summer and the new owners are under pressure to deliver something the fans can get behind. Yes, they won the Conference League and Club World Cup last year, but Chelsea are about to miss out on the Champions League for a second time since the new ownership model was put in place and that is going to produce a financial hit on the club.

Fans were far from happy on Bank Holiday Monday as Chelsea crumbled to another Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge and they have slipped to 9th in the standings and with serious concerns of finishing below West London rivals Brentford and Fulham. The Blues do have a 7-4-6 away record in the Premier League, which means only three clubs have earned more points on their travels this season.

Chelsea have alarmingly lost 8 of the last 10 games in all competitions and both exceptions have been in the FA Cup against Port Vale and Leeds United as the side have reached the Final. They have not only lost the last 3 away games in a row, but Chelsea have been beaten by three goal margins in each of those defeats.

Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho both missed out on Monday and will be hoping to bolster the options. Robert Sanchez and Jesse Derry were injured in the 1-3 home defeat to Nottingham Forest and the former is doubtful, while the latter is almost certainly out.

Head to Head

Chelsea beat Liverpool 2-1 at Stamford Bridge earlier this season.

Liverpool have been better at Anfield where they have beaten Chelsea twice in a row in the Premier League.

Prediction

The opening Premier League game of the weekend was selected for broadcast several weeks ago and at that time it felt like it could be a huge fixture for both Liverpool and Chelsea as far as Champions League qualification was concerned.

Things have changed with Liverpool putting together a run of form that means they are on the brink of a top five finish, while Chelsea have been in a remarkable slump.

The 1-3 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Monday night means Chelsea have lost 6 Premier League games in a row since beating Aston Villa 1-4 at Villa Park. Only an injury time consolation last Monday prevented Chelsea from losing a sixth League game in a row without scoring and they are in danger of missing out on European Football completely, never mind the Champions League.

Supporters are far from happy, unsurprisingly, and the new ownership model has been getting criticised far and wide.

Big decisions about the next manager and some of the playing staff will be made in the summer, but Chelsea have looked out of sorts.

They are facing a Liverpool team that have been far from in glowing form in recent weeks, but one that has found results.

Injuries in attacking areas have left Liverpool a little short, but they will be hoping Alexander Isak is available and this is a team playing with more confidence at Anfield. A returning Alisson would be another boost and Liverpool should have too much for a Chelsea team that have looked like they have placed all eggs in winning the FA Cup basket.

The away team can cause problems simply with the quality they do have in the squad, but the players have not looked focused defensively and Liverpool are capable of exploiting that for three more points.
