Preview

There are officially six weeks left of the Major League regular season and that will still feel like enough time for teams to jockey into position ahead of the post-season.

However, it is becoming increasingly likely that the Tampa Bay Rays are going to win the American League East with a 6.5 game lead over the rest and with forty games left. That could yet change, but the Rays also feel like the most consistent team right now as those chasing them deal with injuries.

The team most affected is the New York Yankees (68-55) who are in second place in the Division, although holding a strong spot in the Wild Card race. The Yankees and the Boston Red Sox look like being two more Playoff teams coming out of the American League East, but the improving Toronto Blue Jays (61-64) have not given up hope of being able to defend the American League Pennant won last season.

Three places are now given to Wild Card teams, but one Division has yet to be able to take all three spots in the expanded format. No one will be surprised by that, but the Toronto Blue Jays are only 0.5 games behind the Texas Rangers for the third Wild Card spot behind the Yankees and Red Sox and this could be an unprecedented success for the American League East.

Looking too far ahead would be a mistake as the Blue Jays continue to try and dig out of a hole, but they have won the opening two games in this series and taken five of the last seven against the New York Yankees. That means Toronto are continuing their dominance of a rival that was beaten in the Divisional Series of the post-season in 2025 and the Blue Jays will be handing the ball to Dylan Cease in their bid to complete the sweep.

Dylan Cease has a 7-5 record and 2.40 ERA in twenty-two starts in his first season of a huge contract signed with the Blue Jays and he is doing his part to put this team in a position to succeed.

He did allow three runs in 5 Innings thrown against the Boston Red Sox last time out, but Dylan Cease did not factor into the decision. It also means the pitcher has allowed more than two runs in just three of his last twelve starts for Toronto, although this is a run that began following a game against the New York Yankees where Dylan Cease allowed five runs in 5 Innings thrown and was given the decision loss.

The Yankees will counter with Ryan Weathers, who has been in good recent form as he has perhaps eased into pitching in the famous New York colours. In his first season as a New York Yankees player, Ryan Weathers has a 5-7 record and 3.69 ERA in twenty-three starts, although that does not paint an overall picture about his current level of performance.

Back in early July, Ryan Weathers was pitching with a seasonal ERA of over 4.00, but his last six starts have seen much improvement. In those, Ryan Weathers has a 2-0 record and 2.10 ERA and he has allowed more than one run in just one of the six starts made.

Ryan Weathers will have to erase memories of his two starts against the Toronto Blue Jays when he heads to the mound- he may only have been given the decision loss once, but Weathers has allowed eleven runs in a little shy of 10 Innings thrown and he has given up at least five runs in both starts.

Prediction

Both of these starting pitchers have been in good form, but they will also have to forget about previous performances against the team facing them.

Ryan Weathers is really pitching well, but Dylan Cease may be confident in facing a Yankees batting lineup that is missing three big pieces and continuing to struggle.

New York have scored just two runs in the first two games of the series and have found the Toronto Blue Jays a tough nut to crack over the last fifteen months.

Sweeping is never easily done, but Toronto can back up their starting pitcher to move into a position to do that on Sunday.
