Manchester City

Enzo Maresca may have been a little upset that the controversial winner in the Manchester derby made all of the headlines following the win at Old Trafford, but the Manchester City manager can hardly be surprised. He can be proud of the resilience shown by his team after they were reduced to ten men, but Manchester City's winning goal was awarded thanks to a huge mistake from the officials and one they apologised for hours later.

Ultimately the result is in the books and Manchester City have joined Champions Arsenal with a perfect record in the Premier League this season. They are only behind The Gunners on goal difference, but Manchester City fans will not be concerned about that right now and instead will be looking for the side to improve the 2-0-0 record at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City have won all 6 games played in all competitions since the 3-0 defeat in the Community Shield, while they have earned 4 clean sheets in a row. The side have won 7 of the last 8 games played at the Etihad Stadium in all competitions, including wins in all 3 fixtures played at home under Enzo Maresca.

Jeremy Doku is a doubt, but is closing on a return and should be available after the international break if he does miss this fixture. Phil Foden is serving the second of a three game suspension.

Sunderland

Fifty-three years after playing in European competition for the one and only time, Sunderland returned to continental action with a 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League. Going forward, Sunderland will have to balance the Thursday-Sunday schedule, but Match Day 1 of the Europa League was played on Wednesday and that means Regis Le Bris' team have had enough time to prepare.

The manager has to be given a lot of credit for the development of Sunderland, but the board also have to be praised with the right recruitment pushing them forward. The Black Cats are 14th in the very early Premier League standings, but they have earned 4 points, although the majority of those have been from the opening matches at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland have won 3 of the last 5 games played in all competitions and they will regret the missed Penalty when the game was goalless against Arsenal last weekend, which ended in a 0-2 defeat. They have won 1 of the last 5 away Premier League games played and Sunderland only avoided consecutive away defeats to open this season when scoring a late Penalty at Brentford in a 1-1 draw.

Reinildo was sent off late in the defeat to Arsenal and will serve a suspension.

Head to Head

Manchester City picked up four points against Sunderland last season and three of those were earned from a 3-0 win at the Etihad Stadium.

They have won the last 4 home games against Sunderland.

Prediction

A perfect start to the Premier League season is a clear positive, but Manchester City still have some way to go to really convince under Enzo Maresca.

Each time they win, the confidence will improve within the squad, but Manchester City cannot really state that they have been all that impressive outside of the 1-4 win at Crystal Palace.

Late goals were needed to beat Bournemouth, while Manchester City's 1-0 win over Coventry City saw them give up some big opportunities to the Championship Winners.

And just last week, Manchester City needed the referees to miss the most obvious offside they are likely to see in any given weekend and allow Erling Haaland's goal to decide the derby.

Winning is important and Maresca will be pretty happy with the way Manchester City have been defending in the main.

4 clean sheets in a row will give them belief and they are facing a Sunderland team who had an emotional win over AZ Alkmaar on Wednesday. That marked the first UEFA fixture in fifty-three years and underlines the growth this club have undertaken over the last couple of years, although Regis Le Bris will know that there is still more to come from Sunderland.

They did give Arsenal all they could handle last weekend, but that was at the Stadium of Light and Sunderland have not been nearly as strong away from home. The Black Cats did enough to deserve more points than they have picked up from visits to Portman Road and the Gtech Community Stadium, but this is another step up in challenge and Sunderland may not be able to breach the Manchester City defence in another defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Sunderland can create opportunities and they will be dangerous from set pieces, but Manchester City have been restricting opponents for much of the early part of this season. The new manager will have been pleased with the defensive shape in the win at Old Trafford last weekend and Manchester City can move into the international break behind a win and a clean sheet for a fifth time in a row.
