Football: Spain: La Liga - Round 7
Riyadh Air Metropolitano (Madrid), Spain
Sunday, 20th September 2026 - Kick-Off 16:15 CEST
Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid come into the derby in excellent domestic form. After a difficult spell earlier in September, Diego Simeone's side have responded with consecutive La Liga victories, beating Real Sociedad 3-0 and Osasuna 4-0.
That gives Atletico plenty of confidence heading into one of their biggest fixtures of the season. They have now collected 13 points from six matches and sit only two points behind their city rivals.
Simeone does have selection problems. Pablo Barrios and Alexander Sørloth are ruled out, while Julián Álvarez has returned to training but remains a doubt. Even so, Atletico's recent defensive performances suggest they are in good shape to make this another difficult afternoon for Real at the Metropolitano.
Real Madrid
Real Madrid have won five of their six league matches under José Mourinho, with their only defeat coming away to Real Betis. They have also scored 17 goals in six La Liga games, so there is little doubt about their attacking threat.
Kylian Mbappé remains the obvious danger, supported by the likes of Vinícius Junior, Jude Bellingham and Arda Güler. However, Madrid have not looked completely untouchable away from the Bernabéu and needed a late goal to secure a 3-2 victory at Elche in their latest league outing.
There are still absences in Mourinho's squad as well. Éder Militão, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo are among those dealing with injuries, which could be significant against an Atletico side arriving in much better attacking form.
Betting Verdict
There is very little separating these sides on current form, and home advantage gives Atletico a genuine opportunity to take something from the derby.
Real possess the stronger individual attacking options, but Atletico have just scored seven unanswered goals across their last two league matches and are traditionally difficult to beat at the Metropolitano.
The recent history of this rivalry also points towards another competitive contest. Before Real's 3-2 victory in March, Atletico had gone six consecutive La Liga derbies without defeat.
Neither side needs to dominate for the draw to land. Atletico should be competitive enough at home to prevent Real taking complete control, while Madrid have more than enough attacking quality to respond if Simeone's team score.
A tight 1-1 draw looks a realistic outcome.
