Manchester City v Ipswich Town
Football: English Premier League
Saturday 17th October 2026 - Kick Off 3pm

Manchester City

Enzo Maresca praised the football that was on display at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night, although privately he has to be disappointed that Manchester City fell to a 2-4 home defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Mistakes at the back proved to be costly, but they play at home again this weekend and the expectation is that Manchester City will bounce back.

Of course there will be plenty of noise made about Manchester City playing in the Premier League at a time when most opposition fans are waiting to hear what kind of sanctions face the club having been found guilty on almost all charges against them. The fans will likely make their own feelings clear as Manchester City look to increase the 3 point lead over Champions Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.

Manchester City had won 8 in a row in all competitions before finding themselves 0-3 behind to Paris Saint-Germain in the eventual 2-4 defeat on Match Day 2 of the Champions League Group Stage. The side had begun this season with 4 straight wins at the Etihad Stadium in all competitions, although none of the 3 Premier League wins here have been massively convincing.

Phil Foden is back from a suspension and that gives the manager a full squad of players to pick from. A number of half time changes were made in the defeat in the Champions League as some failed to impress and there are likely going to be some rotation used to freshen up the starting eleven.

Ipswich Town

Just when it felt like Ipswich Town were going to suffer the kind of defeat that hurt them so much two seasons ago, the rally to beat Fulham will have given Gary O'Neil, the squad and the fans a huge amount of confidence. Two years ago Ipswich Town did not earn enough points at Portman Road to survive in the top flight, but that win last Saturday will have done them the world of good.

This weekend will feel like something of a free hit for Ipswich Town who moved up into 10th place in the Premier League table and with a healthy 9 points earned from the opening six matches played. The Tractor Boys have a 1-0-2 record away from home in the top flight and have scored 5 goals, but conceded 8, in the away fixture completed.

Ipswich Town had lost 4 of 5 games played in all competitions before the last international break, but the exception was a Premier League victory at Crystal Palace and the win over Fulham last weekend is a huge boost. They have lost Premier League games at Old Trafford (5-2) and Hill Dickinson Stadium (1-0) around that win at Selhurst Park (2-3).

Issahaku Fatawu is available having served a suspension.

Head to Head

Manchester City scored ten goals in beating Ipswich Town in both Premier League matches two seasons ago.

Prior to the 4-1 win in August 2024, Manchester City had lost 3 of 4 home games against Ipswich Town.

However, those were fixtures were played way before the current owners changed the fortunes of Manchester City.

Prediction

This Premier League fixture is played at a slightly awkward time for Manchester City with Champions League fixtures scheduled either side of it, but the 2-4 loss to Paris Saint-Germain should mean the squad is focused on the three points.

How important three Premier League points are going to be for Manchester City defends on how the appeal against the guilty verdict plays out and whatever sanctions may come about, but the players have to try and focus. They did that in the big win at Anfield and Manchester City played pretty well on Wednesday against the two time defending European Champions, albeit in an attacking sense rather than some of the defensive work.

Enzo Maresca will not anticipate Ipswich Town bring the same kind of attacking threat as Paris Saint-Germain, but he will want to see a bit more authority from his Manchester City team.

They have impressed away from the Etihad Stadium, but the three home Premier League wins have all been in slightly awkward situations- they needed two late goals to beat Bournemouth, only just hung on for a 1-0 win over Coventry City, and then had a back and forth battle against Sunderland that Manchester City were fortunate to win 5-3.

Gary O'Neil's Ipswich Town have been creating problems when travelling away from Portman Road, although the defensive numbers in the trips to Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Everton are worrying.

It is especially the case when considering the opponents who are all looking weaker than Manchester City.

The home team will make some rotation to the starting eleven, but there is enough depth to believe Manchester City have too much for Ipswich Town. This may be the most convincing home win they have produced so far this season and the team will remember scoring ten goals against Ipswich Town two seasons ago, even if there has been considerable transition in the squad since those matches.

Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick the last time Ipswich Town visited the Etihad Stadium and the big striker can lead Manchester City to a cover of the Asian Handicap line set out for this League game.
