Everton
He may not admit it, but David Moyes will have been looking forward to this fixture as soon as he took over as manager at Goodison Park. It helps that the pressure has been eased on Everton thanks to positive results earned under Moyes and that relegation is almost certainly off the table.
They moved back up into 15th place in the Premier League table after results last weekend and Everton are 16 points clear of the bottom three and with ten League games left to play. The side have a 4-6-4 record at Goodison Park and Everton would love to put some strong results together in the final few games to be played in this famous old Stadium.
Everton were beaten in the FA Cup Fourth Round by Bournemouth, but they are unbeaten in 8 Premier League games. The 1-1 draw with Wolves last weekend does mean that 4 of the last 5 League fixtures have ended with the points shared out. Everton are unbeaten in 4 at Goodison Park in the Premier League and would have had 3 wins in that run if they had not blown a 2-0 lead over Manchester United last time out here.
David Moyes is hoping Dwight McNeil, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Armando Broja and Iliman Ndiaye can all be back in the squad after the March international break.
West Ham United
Graham Potter is the second man to take over as manager of West Ham United since the decision was made to move on from David Moyes and the fans are happier with what they are seeing from the team. The real judgement will be made in nine months time when Potter has been given time to put a stamp on the squad and really have his methods instilled.
The inconsistent form under Julen Lopetegui is a factor in the current 16th place West Ham United are occupying in the Premier League table. Of course they will want to see if they can finish higher up the standings over the next three months, but The Hammers are not really worrying about those below them in the relegation fight. They head to the North West this weekend with a 4-4-5 away record in the top flight.
West Ham United had won consecutive Premier League games before losing 0-1 at home against Newcastle United on Monday. The Hammers had lost 3 of 4 away games in all competitions, but did snap that run in their 0-1 win at Arsenal last month.
Vladimir Coufal is a doubt this weekend.
Head to Head
The meeting at the London Stadium ended goalless earlier this season.
West Ham United have enjoyed recent visits to Goodison Park with 3 wins in 4 Premier League visits to this ground, including a 1-3 win here in March 2024.
Prediction
It would be incredibly surprising if David Moyes made his feelings public, but there has to be some disappointment with the way his time ended at West Ham United.
He was not happy with a contract offer that had been given to him, but withdrawn before Moyes could make a decision, and the manager may feel aggrieved that the fans did not offer more support considering the successes he had at the London Stadium.
With all that in mind, David Moyes has to be highly motivated to send an Everton team out onto the field that can get the better of his former club.
David Moyes will know plenty about West Ham United's squad, which will help, but Everton are short of attacking options and that could soon change. Even then, Everton are creating chances and they have been very good at home since Moyes returned to Goodison Park with the team unbeaten in 4 Premier League games here and unfortunate not to have beaten Manchester United to make it 3 wins in that run.
A similar level of performance would give Everton every chance of beating a West Ham United team learning under Graham Potter.
They have played well and West Ham United have real quality in the final third, which makes them dangerous, but they are still missing a focal point to the attacking play. Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus are very capable, but Everton have been pretty solid under David Moyes and they may just edge to the three points.
Recent home results against West Ham United have not been the best, but David Moyes had been in the opposition dugout for those and this time he can lead Everton to the victory and earn a measure of 'revenge' against his former club.
