Liverpool

The final week before the March international break was a difficult one for Liverpool as they were beaten in the Champions League Last 16 and then put in a poor effort in losing to Newcastle United in the League Cup Final. Fans will still be very pleased if the season ends with the Premier League title, although those results and news that Trent Alexander-Arnold is likely to leave on a Free Transfer to Real Madrid at the end of the season has just put a dampener on things.

Everything could be livened up on Wednesday when the last Merseyside derby of the season is played at Anfield with Liverpool 12 points clear in the Premier League title race and closing in on becoming English Champions. That gap could be smaller if Arsenal have not thrown away more points on Tuesday, but Liverpool will be focusing on themselves and looking to improve the 11-2-1 record at Anfield regardless of what has happened in North London twenty-four hours earlier.

Liverpool had won 4 in a row in all competitions before the 0-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield and followed by the 1-2 loss to Newcastle United at Wembley. Since the 2-2 draw with Manchester United, The Reds have won 4 home Premier League games in a row.

Alisson and Ryan Gravenberch are doubts with the latter expected to be available and the former perhaps given a few more days of recovery. Everyone will be waiting to see the reaction Trent Alexander-Arnold gets after news of his impending move broke, but the right back is not expected to be available until the end of the month at best. Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley should both return later in the month too.

Everton

After stating he will not visit the new Stadium until Everton are mathematically safe from the drop, David Moyes needs his team to pick up a few more points before he can see the Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium. He would love for Everton to pick up three of those in the Merseyside derby having helped the squad produce strong form since returning as manager of the club.

They are 15th in the Premier League table and 17 points clear of the bottom three, but Everton are not quite over the line mathematically, even if no one expects them to be relegated. The Toffees make the very short trip to Anfield with a 3-6-5 away record having scored 11 goals and conceded 18 in those matches.

Everton were dumped out of the FA Cup by Bournemouth in the Fourth Round, but David Moyes returned with the ambition of keeping the club in the Premier League and they are unbeaten in 9 top flight fixtures. The side are unbeaten in 4 away Premier League games and Everton have picked up 8 points from a possible 12 in that run, although have been held to consecutive away draws at Brentford and Wolves.

Vitalii Mykolenko is a doubt, while the likes of Dwight McNeil, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Iliman Ndiaye are hoping to be back imminently.

Head to Head

A James Tarkowski goal rescued a point for Everton in the last Merseyside derby to be played at Goodison Park in February.

Liverpool have beaten their Merseyside rivals 3 times in a row at Anfield and all by the same 2-0 scoreline.

Prediction

Twelve months ago, Liverpool seemingly ran out of gas at this time of the season and they were Knocked Out of the FA Cup, Europa League and then fell away in the Premier League title race in the space of a couple of weeks.

There is something similar about recent performances with Liverpool eliminated in the Champions League Last 16 and then producing an incredibly flat performance in the League Cup Final defeat to Newcastle United.

Arsenal fans have to have some regret that their team have dropped 7 points in recent Premier League games and that has allowed Liverpool to have a 12 point lead at the top of the standings. With that in mind, even tired legs and minds are unlikely to blow the title from this position and Liverpool will be able to return to action without significant pressure on their shoulders.

Things would have felt a lot different if Arsenal were 5 points behind and playing first twice over the coming days, but Liverpool will be firm in the knowledge that four more wins should be enough to win a second title since 1990.

Hosting Everton will be tough, especially after news of Trent Alexander-Arnold's likely departure broke. The fact he is not playing will perhaps help the crowd to focus and get behind those players that are on the field though and it should give Liverpool the edge against an Everton team that are still missing some key attacking players.

David Moyes has done a fine job since returning to manage the club and a 9 game unbeaten run in the Premier League has to be respected.

However, it cannot be ignored that only 2 of those matches have been against teams in the top half of the table and Everton needed a last second goal to avoid a loss at home against Liverpool. They deserved that result, but other games have seen Everton ride their luck against teams that are in and around their position and a trip to Anfield is a significant test for the players.

Everton will look to sit in and make things tough, but they have lost 3 in a row at Anfield and usually find their stronger results against their rivals at Goodison Park.

The gap between the League Cup Final and this Premier League game should help Liverpool and the expectation is that the League leaders will just find the quality needed to secure a win.

Each of the last 3 games at Anfield have ended 2-0 in favour of Liverpool and that looks the most likely result this week too.
