Football: English Premier League
Sunday 4th May 2025 - Kick Off 2pm
Brentford
Most of the attention on Thursday evening would have been on the European action with three English clubs involved in Semi Final ties, but there was an important Premier League game taking place on the same night. Goals in each half were enough to earn Brentford an important 0-2 win at the City Ground and Thomas Frank has openly spoken about finishing 8th, even if that is not a position that comes with European Football next season.
It will open up for European Football if Manchester City win the FA Cup, but the only focus for Thomas Frank and his Brentford team is backing up the big result produced. Home form has hit the skids in recent weeks, but Brentford do have an 8-4-5 record at the Gtech Community Stadium in the Premier League this season and they are just 2 points behind West London rivals Fulham who currently occupy 8th place in the standings.
Brentford are unbeaten in 4 Premier League games and they have won consecutive fixtures against Brighton and Nottingham Forest to just reignite the push towards the top eight places. The victory over Brighton feels really important as it snapped an 8 game run without a home victory and just gives Brentford the momentum to finish this season very strongly.
A few members of the squad are not expected to play again this season, but Thomas Frank all who travelled to Nottingham are ready to go again.
Manchester United
Prior to kick off, most Manchester United fans would have taken a draw at Athletic Bilbao and looked to complete the job in the Europa League Semi Final at Old Trafford next week. After some early opportunities for the home team, things changed dramatically and by half time Manchester United held a 0-3 lead.
They could not add to that advantage in the second half against the ten men of Athletic Bilbao, but Manchester United have one foot in the Europa League Final to be played later this month. With that in mind, Ruben Amorim has admitted he needs to utilise the squad and 14th placed Manchester United bring a 4-6-7 away record into this fixture.
Manchester United have saved their best form and performances for the Europa League and they return to domestic action having failed to win any of their 5 Premier League games played since the March international break. A late goal at the Vitality Stadium earned Manchester United a point last Sunday and also prevented the team losing for a third straight away Premier League game.
Tobias Collyer is a doubt, but the positive on Thursday was having Matthijs de Ligt and Amad back in action. Neither is expected to be risked from the start, but the likes of Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Christian Eriksen could come in to freshen things up.
Head to Head
Brentford scored first at Old Trafford in October, but it was Manchester United who that game 2-1 in what proved to be Erik ten Hag's final home game in charge. These two clubs have met three times at the Gtech Community Stadium since Brentford returned to the top flight- both have a win each, while the last fixture here ended 1-1 after both teams scored in injury time.
Prediction
Both Brentford and Manchester United earned surprising away wins on Thursday, but there is a feeling that this Premier League game may mean a lot more to the home team.
Ruben Amorim continues to let the media know that the Premier League finish is important to him and there has been some mention of the financial reward of finishing as high as possible.
However, everyone connected with Manchester United are well aware of the importance of winning the Europa League and earning a return to the Champions League. With a tough win under their belt, Manchester United have one foot in the Final, but the manager is not prepared to take any risks with his players.
Changes will be made, but Manchester United showed at Bournemouth that they are still resilient and perhaps beginning to believe in what Ruben Amorim wants the players to do.
This will all be tested in West London when visiting the Gtech Community Stadium and a Brentford team that have firmly eyeing up a top eight finish in the Premier League. If Manchester City win the FA Cup, that would mean European Football being played by Brentford next season and Thomas Frank has set an 8th place finish as the target for his squad.
Back to back Premier League wins behind some very good attacking football has offered encouragement to finish the season as strongly as possible. It has also meant some teams are beginning to circle around some of the talented players that have been developed by Brentford and credit has to be given to the squad in keeping as focused as they have been.
You have to believe the energy with the home team could be important and it may be tough for Manchester United to contain Brentford.
They were second best at Bournemouth last Sunday before the red card that changed the momentum within the game and it may be tough to contain a Brentford team that have scored six goals in their last two Premier League wins. Thomas Frank will want his team to be aggressive and get on the front foot and Brentford may extend their unbeaten run to 3 at home against Manchester United, while beating them for a second time in three seasons in front of the home fans.
